The Mandarin Chinese programs are held in China's leading universities in Beijing. Beijing is regarded as the optimal learning environment for standard Mandarin Chinese and ideal for language immersion. These immersion programs consist of four components: 1) core language classes 2) after-class tutoring 3) language exchange program and
4) electives. These components are designed to allow participants to progress rapidly and gain fluency in the language.

1) Core Language Classes
To cater for different needs, core language classes are offered at two locations:

Option 1: Beijing Fulaide language school
Option 2: Beijing Language and Culture University (Beijing Yuyan Wenhua Daxue BLCU)

In both institutions, core language classes integrate all aspects of Mandarin Chinese including reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, phonetics and vocabulary. Accelerated teaching methods allow participants at lower proficiency levels to acquire the language skills needed for effective communication in a short period of time, and advanced students to gain expression proficiency at an abstract level. Topics studied include everyday situations, as well as Chinese culture, society, and history. Listening and speaking skills are emphasized to enable participants to attain communicative proficiency.

Participants are required to state whether they wish to study at the outside of school or the university. The options also differ in starting dates and class sizes.

Host Family
Live in a Chinese home and learn about Chinese life and culture while improving your language skills. Daily contact with your hosts will quickly enhance your understanding of local customs and culture. Home stay hosts are interviewed and personally selected based on a number of factors, including the cleanliness and comfort of the home, nature of meals (that they are varied and balanced), and their ability to welcome international guests. Breakfast and dinner are provided on weekdays. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided on weekends. Host families are located in the nearby suburbs. Each room is furnished with modern furniture, bed and storage area for clothes and personal belongings. Single room occupancy is provided.

 

Residence Room (Single/Double) : Comprises of one room and private bathroom. Single or double share occupancy is available.

Residence Studio (Single/Double) : Comprises of one bedroom, separate living room with kitchenette and private bathroom. Single or double share occupancy is available.

Live in a three star hotel. Each room is fully equipped with modern furniture, bed, fridge, private bathroom, satellite TV, air-conditioning, and telephone (IDD and ISD). Classwork focuses on developing oral expression, listening comprehension, reading comprehension, writing, and grammar. Up-to-date materials are used to introduce modern day China, its social and economic life, culture, history, and literature. General aims of the classes are as follows:

Oral Expression Classes: focus on developing participants' oral expression and pronunciation skills. At the lower proficiency levels simple topics related to daily life are taught, and more specialized and complex topics are taught at the higher proficiency levels.
Listening Comprehension Classes: focus on developing participants' listening comprehension skills and the ability to understand the language when spoken at a normal speed.
Reading Comprehension Classes: focus on developing participants' reading skills in both comprehension and speed.
Writing Classes: focus on the fundamentals of the radical system, bushou, composition of characters and stroke orders.
Grammar Classes: focus on the fundamentals of Chinese grammar, sentence structures, expressions, and phonetics.

 

Getting to know locals is an integral part of the program. It provides language and cultural interaction between participants and Chinese students, marking the beginning of many lasting friendships. This program provides the perfect opportunity to practice the language and encourages cultural and social exchange. Participants schedule to meet with one another at their convenience.

 

DISCOUNT TRAVEL

Discounted tour packages to places of interest such as Xian, Inner Mongolia, Shanghai, Datong and Zhengzhou are available to participants. Full package tours for the weekend or the week, covering train tickets, hotel, food, English speaking guide, admission to major attractions, meals and transport range from as little as USD 150 to 350.

Teachers of the programs are native Chinese and each has a degree in teaching Mandarin Chinese as a foreign language. Designed to focus on developing spoken Chinese and fluency, programs consist of 20 core language classes a week complemented by after-class tutoring, electives, and language exchange with a native speaker (see description above). The curriculum is designed based on the needs of each proficiency level and the program duration. Modern teaching methods focus on instilling linguistic, practical, and cultural aspects of the language as well as the Chinese way of life. Classwork using everyday topics and interactive teaching methods ensure that participants achieve the goals of each proficiency level and progress rapidly.

Long Term Programs:
1 Semester
Academic Year 1 Semester Intensive

Designed with a similar structure and content to the Short Term Programs, these programs consist of core language classes; 20 hours a week for the semester program, 30 hours a week for the semester intensive program, and 24 hours a week for the academic year program; complemented by after-class tutoring, electives, and language exchange with a native speaker (see description above). These programs are ideal for those who wish to devote a significant amount of time to learning and mastering the language. Participants improve rapidly in the language and become well acquainted with the Chinese lifestyle and customs. Classwork combined with after-class tutoring, electives, excursions, and activities ensures a comprehensive learning experience.

ASSESSMENT

Participants' progress is assessed by continuous homework assignments and tests throughout the program. Semester and academic year programs have formal final term examinations in addition to tests. Attendance is mandatory. Participants are awarded official diplomas and transcripts at the end of the program.

 

ARRIVAL TRANSFER

Free transport from the airport in Beijing to your accommodation is provided. The following important details are required at least 10 days before your arrival:

An emergency number is provided in the Welcome Pack for any last minute arrival delays. Participants are met at their arrival point and accompanied to their accommodation.

 

Q:FOOD -- How much do meals cost?
A: The cafeteria on campus offers single dish meals with rice for as little as 4 RMB (US$.50) per meal. Chinese restaurants on campus and in the local area offer meals for 10 - 20 RMB (~US$1-3) per person. Western restaurants cost between 50 and 100 RMB (~US$5 - 10) per person per meal.

 

Q: INTERNET -- How can I get access to the Internet?
Internet access is provided free to Total Program students via terminals in the WLE Center. WLE also helps arrange in-room Internet access for interested students living in the hotel. Chinese Internet service providers are very inexpensive. For students not enrolled in the Total Program, there are many Internet cafes in the university district.

Q: LAUNDRY -- Where can I do laundry?
A:Washing machines are available for guest use in the WorldLink residence. There are also Laundromats located nearby, which provides laundering, ironing, and dry cleaning services. Laundry service is also available on campus for students living there.

Q: MONEY -- What other types of expenses should I plan for while in Beijing?
A: Entertainment in Beijing is generally inexpensive. Transportation options include the public bus (which costs less than 1 RMB per ride) and subway (2 RMB per ride), as well as taxi service which costs 10 RMB (~US$1.25) for short distances and up to 30 RMB to go across town or downtown. Many students also opt to buy bicycles while they are in China. Bicycles are the most prevalent mode of transport in Beijing and the flat topography makes Beijing an ideal city for this type of transportation. New bicycles can be purchased for around 200 RMB (US$25).

Q: MONEY -- How can I get or exchange money while I am in Beijing?
A: You may bring money with you, either in the form of cash or traveler's checks. ATM machines are available at limited Bank of China and CITIC Industrial Bank locations (downtown), or cash advances can be drawn over the counter at most large banks for a transaction charge. Major hotels and most fine restaurants and stores now accept credit cards. Students enrolling for longer courses may wish to open a bank account through the Industrial & Commercial Bank on campus and transfer funds from accounts in their home country.

Q: PREPARATIONS -- What do I need to bring with me?
A: Today in Beijing you can find almost any product and brand that you would find at home. Soap, shampoo, toothpaste, etc. are all readily available. We recommend that you bring any prescription medication in sufficient quantities to last for the duration of your visit and any preferred brands of over-the-counter medications (cold & flu tablets, etc.) Clothing is also plentiful and very inexpensive. Shoes are available, but larger sizes are hard to find.

Q:VACCINATIONS -- What vaccinations do I need for China?
A:The following vaccinations and applicable frequencies are recommended for students coming to China: Hepatitis A (within previous 10 years); Hepatitis B (within previous 5 to 10 years), Japanese B Encephalitis (within previous 3 years); Tetanus (within previous 10 years); Polio (within previous 10 years); and Typhoid (once in lifetime). Students 55 and older should also have a Pneumococcal Vaccine.

Q: VOLTAGE -- What is the voltage used in China?
A: The voltage here is 220. Converters and power strips may be purchased locally.

Q: WEATHER -- What is the weather like in Beijing?
A: Winter (December - March) in Beijing is dry and windy. The capital experiences perhaps one or two snowfalls per winter, and the temperature hovers around 0 degrees Celsius for most of the season. Down jackets are recommended. Spring (April - May) is brief, but temperatures are pleasant (13 - 18 degrees Celsius). Sand and grit from the Gobi Desert to the north bring occasional dust storms. Summer (June - August) is hot with sticky humidity and afternoon thundershowers. The average temperature is 26 degrees Celsius. Fall (September - November) temperatures range from 5 degrees to the mid-teens. Evenings may turn unexpectedly cold. Light jackets or sweaters are needed.
