My system of choice has been up until now Chicago. I have been ‘Waiting for Jupiter’ for a good long while. Now that Jupiter is here in all her glory I’m not sure if I want to jump. You see Open Source, the moral choice is calling me.
I quite like the analogy of storage space and working space to explain the difference between the two types of memory. Hard disk space is your filing cabinet and RAM is your desk space (replace with tool chest and workbench for a more blue collar view of life). My real experience of computers doesn’t go back very far but I do remember one Gigabyte being a cavernous amount of hard disk space for a desktop computer. Now one Gigabyte isn’t a ridiculous amount of RAM to have in a laptop.
The whole world is going for bigger and (supposedly) better numbers. As I said I’ve not been into computers that long. When I bought my first system (from the now defunct GW2K) ‘way back’ in 1997 I had accepted that computers cost a lot and were obsolete instantly. The pace of change since then has astounded me. Processor speeds are up by ten fold. But you have to question whether anyone really having more fun or being more productive than they were four or five years ago.
In my opinion communication is what makes the world go ‘round. People need to talk to each other. Therefore the Internet and more specifically e-mail deserves person of the year or whatever. It is certainly the glue that holds my life together! That makes me a sad geek...
