Alexei Nemov
BIOGRAPHY:
Born on the 28th May 1976 in Barashevo, Russia, Alexei grew up in a small town of Togliatti on the Volga River with his single mother, with whom he is very close to. It was in his hometown that Alexei graduated fom the Togliatti Children's Education Institute, majoring in Artistic Gymnastics Coaching.nemov also has an apartment in Nakhabino near Moscow, but he still continues his residence in the little town of togliatti, living with his wife, Galina (whom he married June 2, 2000), her son from a previous marriage and the coouples' new born son, also named Alexei. Little Alexei was born 2nd September shortly before the Sydney Olympics began, while Alexei was training in isolation with his team-mates in Adelaide.
As a young child, Alexei wanted to play hockey or
soccer, but his mother thought that gymnastics would
be better for her son. As soon as he turned 5, she took
him to a gym sponsored by an auto manufacturer in
their hometown of togliatti. He began under the
tutelage of Alexander Musayev and Irina Shestakovaya
and later, Yevgeny Grigorievick Nikolko. His 1st
report card read "School - satisfactory. Physically weak. Very good co-ordination. Fighter audacious. Has good prospects in gymnastics" He got off to a rather inauspicious beginning, finishing 6th out of 6 in his 1st in-house competition. Nemov was eventually spotted and judged a remarkable talent by Nikolai Andrianov, the Soviet national junior coach. At 14, he made the national junior team and was invited to train and live at the famed Round Lake Training Centre outside Moscow. Since 1992, he has been on the Russian senior team. Alexei is obviously an exceedingly elegant gymnast - he is graceful and athletic on every apparatus he touches - he puts the "art" back into artistic gymnastics. His toes are always perfectly pointed, his legs extended so they look about 5 feet long and his body so straight you could use it as a ruler. Hiso nly problem is his lack of physical strengt, which is especially needed in Rings. He repeatedly suffers from back, wrist and shoulder injuries which also make performance on the Rings very difficult. Needless to say, Alexei's favourite apparatus is Floor and his worst is Rings, the only apparatus for which he has never won a medal. The gymnasts most admires Dmitri Bilozerchev and Nikolai Andranov.
In 1993, Alexei made his world debut, but despite  qualifying highly, his performance fell aprt in the finals. He had the same bad luck in Brisbane 1994. His big breakthrough only came at the Goodwill Games in 1994, where he destroyed the competition and won the All-Around by a huge margin, as well as 4 events finals. But his wins were easily outnumbered by an assortment of embarrassing collapses in the following European Cups and World Competitions, in which Alexei performed poorly once again. It was in Atlanta that Alexei truly became one of the most well-known names in gymnastics, earning millions of fans around the world - especially once coined "Sexy Alexei" after displaying his

characteristic charisma and antics - such as appearing shirtless at the Atlanta Games gala! although he lost by hundredths of a point, he still left the Games as the gymnast with the most medal, as well as the crown of fan favourite! In Russian newspapers he became known as "the male Anna kournikova - except that every once in a while, he wins something!"
