Clever Girl... >> Music >> Soundtrack To 2000

When I was in New Zealand... I think it was the day Kate and I went to Devanport... Kate mentioned to me an idea she had.  She was planning to make a CD full of all the songs that she and her friends had listened to over the past year (did you ever end up doing that?).  I, of course, thought this was a fabulous idea and, upon returning to Sydney, promptly set about creating my own 'Soundtrack to 2000'.

Of course, being me, I went a little overboard and ended up with 24 songs on the tape, but all the same... It's the best mix tape I've ever made.  A literal chronological journey through everything that happened last year.

1. I Try - Macy Gray

Because Carmen and I used to go around singing it all the time... and also because it had minor lyrical significance at the beginning of the year.  It was also played a lot at schoolies, although that was 1999.

2. Candy - Mandy Moore

Basically because Carmen and I used to sing it all the time.

3. Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely - The Backstreet Boys
Because of that funny image of me, Kate, and Liv, all walking down the street like three demented blonde Backstreet Boys, singing this song.

4. Bye Bye Bye - 'N Sync

Because Saru and I used to sing it all the time, and because of the time my mum was driving me to band comp, this song came on the radio, and we both started headbanging. ;)

5. Runaway Run - Hanson

From a distance I watched the flowers brush your cheek
But as you read the words I wrote I couldn't speak
And now I lay here broken heart and blistered feet
As you're spinning round my mind
And I waited for you
Just dreaming of you coming to me
And I waited for you...

Lyrical significance.  Obviously.

6. Oops! I Did It Again! - Britney Spears

You see my problem is this
I'm dreaming away
Wishing that heroes would truly exist
I cry watching the days
Can't you see I'm a fool in so many ways?
But to lose all my senses, that is just so typically me...

Lyrical significance. ;)

7. Say My Name - Destiny's Child
Lyrical significance.  And also because of Carmen's and my funny dancing at Richa's party... and maybe at Halloween too, I can't remember.

8. Artificial Sweetner - No Doubt
I'm on the fence, push me off it...
Lyrical significance.

9. I'm Outta Love - Anastacia
Yet more lyrical significance. ;)

10.  Wonderful - Everclear

I close my eyes when I get too sad
I think thoughts that I know are bad
Close my eyes and I count to ten
Hope it's over when I open them
I want the things that I had before
Like a star wars poster on my bedroom door
I wish I could count to ten
Make everything be wonderful again

And more lyrical signficance. ;)

11. Bathwater - No Doubt
And yes, more.

12. Lucky - Britney Spears
Kat's party. ;)

13. Jumpin Jumpin - Destiny's Child

All those times those Carmen and I danced to it in the car. ;)

14. Been It - The Cardigans

Sweetie-pie, I'm your personal pro, you know
You know what number to try when to cry
I've been your mother, I've been your father
Who could ask me for more?
I've been your sister, I've been your mistress
Maybe I was your whore...

The prostitution is a
metaphor.

15. Loneliness Is Worse - Veruca Salt
December's all alone and he's calling me on the phone
But he sounds so cold
He says he loves me so
But how would I ever know?
Certain words grow old
It's a vicious kind of catch it sides me blind
Now I'm out of my mind
I want to scream

What do you think? ;)

16. Rome Wasn't Built In A Day - Morcheeba
A little conversation Carmen and I had in the car one day.

17. Comforting Lie - No Doubt
I started out on the wrong foot now I'm not myself
I am Jekyll, I am Hyde, found this place hide, come seek me
Oh, so up and down, so back and forth, so insecure
Can't get this taste out of my mouth, swallow it down, pretend
And hold it, hold it all in, let it build up, oh build a bomb
And blow it, blow it away, clear it all out just end it
I'm just a normal person without those problems when did it change
Admissions so embarrassing I'm on the verge of tears again
Oh look I took the bandaid off, did I take it off too soon?
Hysterical confessions, my big courageous move
Don't gasp at the predictable, a comforting lie can't last
Preordained checklist of this awkward love it's so sad

The official song of the Obliteration.

18. Everything You Need - Madison Avenue
Halloween.

19. Last One Standing - Girl Thing
My song with Kat. ;)

20. Something Deep Inside - Billie Piper
Carmen and I used to sing it all the time.  Also, dancing at Berry Street.

21. Teenage Dirtbag - Wheetus

The day we went to Burwood to shop, and I said it was my song. ;)  Also when Kate was here, and Ra and I were driving people home from clubbing, Ra's car had it turned up really loud, rolled down their windows... so I turned my music up louder.

22. Independent Women - Destiny's Child

Charleez Angels, come on.  Dancing with Carmen the night of my farewell, just after we'd seen the movie, singing the song with Kate, realising the irony, and changing the lyrics. ;)
The shoes on my feet - they're broken
The clothes I'm wearing - I borrowed them
The rock I'm rockin' - don't got one
'Cause I depend on mum
If I wanted the watch you're wearing - I'd whine for it
The house I live in - my parents
The car I sit in - it's Andrew's
I depend on everyone

23. (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction - Britney Spears
Dancing with Kate and her friends in NZ.

24. Lydia - Fur Patrol
Kate and I singing this song obsessively when in NZ..
