Clever Girl... >> Entertainment >> Movies Dedication to (surprise, surprise) some of my favourite movies. Yes, I am a tacky person, but leave me alone. middle class America isn't actually as picture perfect as it seems... you know, like, teeheehee!" But now I would say "American Beauty demonstrates the fragility of utopia". Ahhhh... the joys of English class. ;) the postmodern quality of the film - the mishmash of popular culture over the past century. It was laden with cliches, sure, but for some reason it didn't bother me. I thought it was a shoo-in for best film next year. It was just... true art. And true art is so rare these days. I'm sure there are others, but they're just not coming to mind at the moment. back

American Beauty is probably my favourite movie, which is kind of lame in a sense, because it was only released in 1999, making me look like one of those terribly shortsighted, uneducated ppeople. Which would be because I am. ;) My movie memory only extends back to about 1994, so you'll have to forgive me. Anyway... I like American Beauty because it's witty, funny, idealistic, yet, at the same time... Well, a year ago, I would have described it with "Well, it shows that
Moulin Rouge is my second favourite movie. As I wrote directly after seeing it: "I went to see Moulin Rouge today. I loved it. Completely, utterly... oh my god, where do I even begin. Even ten minutes into the movie I could tell I was going to love it. I was entranced. I loved the sentiment - the bohemians who wanted to express truth, beauty, freedom and love through art. I loved the ornate photography. I loved the music. I loved
High Fidelity is another recent movie (2000), but it really is delightfully funny, and so true, and I love it. It also doesn't hurt that all throughout the first screening of the movie my friends were laughing and saying that John Cusaak's character was me.
When Harry Met Sally... I wasn't actually too fond of this the first time I saw it, but the second time... I'm into that sort of playful love story. It's not too soppy, which is good. Plus... well... it was played at the first 'Postmodern Video Night' (the movie in itself may not be postmodern, but our reading of it was, so there! :p).
The Hairy Bird. I've seen it five times, but it always puts a smile to my face. It's just so... funny. And good. And Kirsten Dunst's character is really funny and cool and vibey and damn I wish I was more like her.
The Virgin Suicides. Back to depraved, evil Rachel. See my reasons for liking American Beauty. ;)
Bridget Jones's Diary. Me at 30. That says it all.
The Talented Mr Ripley. It's very rare that I walk away from a movie commenting on how talented the actors involved are, but Matt Damon's performance in this one is exceptional.
Clueless. The teen movie classic. Back in year 8 and 9, Emma and I used to have the script practically memorised.
Legally Blonde. I thought it was hilarious, and Elle Woods's positivity made her my hero for the shortest of times.
Grease... even though it would suck without the music.
Reality Bites. Another high school classic.
Streetcar Named Desire. Vivien Leigh's portrayal of Blanche Doubois is probably the best acting I've ever seen. I wouldn't even attempt to play that part are seeing her do it.
And The Band Played On. Even though I saw this as part of our year 9 geography course, it's still a really good movie. Both touching, and informative. (And, in a sick way, the doctor is kinda sexy. ;))
Which brings me to Outbreak. Because ebola is interesting.
Scream is pretty good too.
As is Romeo And Juliet. And not just because it was made back in the days before Leonardo DiCaprio turned festy.
Who could forget Whatever It Takes? Okay, that was a lie, just checking that you were still paying attention.
I do like Charlie's Angels though. "Tuesday? That's my favourite day! I love tickets!" seems eerily similar to one of my most embarrassing moments. ;)
I can't believe it took me this long to remember Almost Famous. Recommended to me by the one person who recommends movies on the basis of thinking I'll like them, rather than merely liking the movie themselves, and with good reason. Very inspiring.
The Truman Show. Jim Carrey actually proved that he could act.
