Clever Girl... >> Music >> Bands I Like

The Big Five
(in no particular order)

Hole are... nothing short of brilliant.  As I once said, "there is a Hole song for every occasion".  The profound nature of the lyrics is just.. wow.  So much pain, so much loss of innocence.
Favourite song: too many to choose from, but I'll go with Reasons To Be Beautiful for now.

No Doubt... their recent album describes my experience of first year uni... perfectly.  "I can't dye my hair pink, then I'll look like a Gwen Stefani wannabe!  Which I am, but..."
Favourite song: Sunday Morning, or Bathwater

Garbage... oh dear, this page is getting a little gushy.  Garbage are cool.  Musically brilliant.  Gotta love them.
Favourite song: Cup Of Coffee, Shut Your Mouth

Yes, I also love
Blondie.  Classic pop music in the Phil Spector tradition (despite being produced by Mike Chapman).
Favourite Song: so hard.  Hmmm... Dreaming, One Way Or Another, Sunday Girl, X Offender...

Well, the
Nina Gordon websites don't allow you to steal pictures, so I'm using instead this one of Veruca Salt (Nina's the blonde) who, while not making the top 5, would make the later list.
Favourite songs: Hold Onto Me (Nina), Volcano Girls (Veruca Salt).

More Bands I Like (in some order, I suppose)

Killing Heidi used to be in the big five, but were displaced because... well... they weren't quite addictive enough. ;)
Favourite song: Mascara

*gasp*  I like...
Britney Spears??? Well yes, I do.  Britney is perhaps the most interesting pop star around today, and while she can't sing for shit, her songs... well... I think they're good.  And so do most musiciany people.  Anyway, click here to find out why I do (like her, that is ;)).
Favourite song: Overprotected
*anticipates hate mail*

Ahh... the more peer-pleasing
Ben Folds Five are also very good.  A great "break up" band, I think.  Very touching music.
Favourite song: Selfless, Cold and Composed

Madonna
is just one of those classic pop stars, and one of the few who has never really put out a bad song.
Favourite song: Vogue, Material Girl

It's a rare band that has two cute members, but
Blur does.  That's not why I like them, of course.  Their music is also very good, especially on the self-titled album.
Favourite song: Song 2

Oasis doesn't have any cute members, but I like them anyway. ;)  See - I'm not superficial! :p
Favourite song: Wonderwall

Is that...?  No, wait, she wouldn't... not in relative public... like
Hanson?
Favourite song: Wake Up (just to spite Liv :p)

Ahhh...
Radiohead, now that's more like it.  Yes, Radiohead are also very good, gotta love Radiohead.
Favourite song: Creep

The
Spice Girls were far more energetic and interesting than any of the pop stars who followed them, including Britney. ;)  Spiceworld is also a very good album.
Favourite song: that's actually tricky. ;)  Ermmm... Saturday Night Divas?

Besides having a phenomenal voice,
Jewel is one of the few artists who actually appears to try to make a difference through her music.
Favourite song: Foolish Games

Seventeen year old
Michelle Branch has come a long way, from posting on a certain message board I frequent and signing my guestbook, to supporting famous bands (yes, as an independent), getting signed to Madonna's Maverick Records, and releasing her first single in June 2001.  Yes, we can say we knew her before she was famous. *grin*
Favourite song: Something To Sleep To

Listen to
Janet Jackson records from the 80s and tell me you don't see just how big an influence she was on Britney, 'N Sync and co.  Only Janet is better. ;)
Favourite song: Black Cat

U2
are just brilliant and Bono's voice is just divine.
Favourite song: All I Want Is You

REM are similarly wonderful.
Favourite song: Imitation Of Life

And yes, I like
Natalie Imbruglia's music too.
Favourite songs: Torn, That Day

And how could I forget the great
Liz Phair?
Favourite songs: Polyester Bride and Johnny Feelgood

Despite having broken up, I think the
All Saints are pretty funky.  Especially on their second album, which strangely bombed.
Favourite song: Saints And Sinners

Destiny's Child are also pretty funky for a pop group.
Favourite song: Say My Name

Coldplay
.  I listen to Yellow and try not to cry from the withering of my insides.
Favourite song: Yellow

Awww....
Dido is so pretty.  And her songs are so pretty.  Romantic, and yet not soppy.  I like.
Favourite song: Hunter

Christina Aguilera is without doubt the most talented of the current crop of pop princesses, and her songs are such fun to sing, if only for that visceral pleasure, but she's just a little... boring perhaps?  The girl needs better songwriters.
Favourite song: What A Girl Wants (makes for great singing fun)

Other Bands (the ones for which I couldn't find or couldn't be bothered finding pictures)

Kylie Minogue. No, not current Kylie with her hot pants and underwear collection, but 80s Kylie, and indie Kylie.  The reason there are no Kylie pictures here is because I couldn't find a single one that wasn't pornographic in some way, if you'll believe it.
Favourite song: Did It Again

Mandy Moore. Yes, I enjoy her music.  It's fun.  It's even emotional upon occasional.  Her new album is good.  Yes yes yes.
Favourite song: Yo-Yo.

Alanis Morissette.  I think I lost my picture of her.  Anyway, she's very cathartic.
Favourite song: You Oughtta Know

Nelly Furtado.
Just saw her live today.  She's very odd, but strangely cool nonetheless.
Favourite song: Turn Off The Light

60s Girl-pop. The Supremes, The Ronettes, The Shangrilas, Leslie Gore, The Crystals, Dusty Springfield, The Exciters... are all brilliant.

Joni Mitchell
Elton John
The Beatles
Blue
Fur Patrol
Tadpole
Stellar
Nirvana
The Smiths
bis
Catatonia
The Cardigans
Frente
Nitocris
Primary
