BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT
Back to School Night is a wonderful opportunity to meet with families and share important information.  I usually give a short speech when parents arrive and then I allow them to browse around our room with their child.  During my talk, I try to cover the following topics:

My teaching philosophy
Curriculum - reading, writing, math, social studies, science
Homework Policy
Discipline Policy
Parental involvement
Class/Teacher/Student expectations

Apple Poem for parents:  each child will have an apple on their desk that has been placed inside a quart-sized ziplock bag (not the sandwich size but not the gallon either).  On the front of the ziplock bag will be this poem:  An apple for the teacher is really nothing new but it is when we remember that parents are teachers too.

3.)  Apple Clothespin Magnet:  Each child will decorate an apple that has been cut from the die cut machine.   A clothespin will be glued to the back and then a magnet will be glued to the clothespin.  Each child will place a piece of their work in the clothepin to later be hung on the refrigerator.

4.)  Letter to Parent/s:  Each child will have written a letter to their parents telling them what the best part about being their kid is.  They will ask their parents to respond to them about what the best part of being their parent is.

5.)  Scavenger Hunt:  Each child will have a scavenger hunt paper on their desk.  Parents will travel with their child throughout the room looking for these places/items.  This will really get the families get a feel of the atmosphere and how the day operates.

GUESS WHO BULLETIN BOARD

Students fold a black piece of construction paper in half.  On the front cover, they fill out a
questionnaire about themselves.  On the inside, they illustrate a picture of themselves and print their name.  On Back to School Night, parents read the questionnaires and try to locate their child.  They can open the black card to determine if they chose the right child!  Very fun - I'll try to post pictures of this bulletin board soon.
