| Getting To Know You Activities and Time Fillers Survey Hunt: Students receive a survey paper in which they must write the name of a classmate next to each category. Click here for survey worksheet. Double Bubble Friends: Students work with a friend to create a double bubble map (or Venn diagram) in which they compare and contrast themselves to their friend. Students can share out. Dream Heads: Teacher traces the outline of each students head silhouette. Teacher or student cuts out the shape and fills their head with thoughts, favorite things, hopes and dreams, etc. These can be shared with the class and also used for Back to School Night..... parents can try to find their child's head. Scenario Index Cards: Write a variety of problem/moral based scenarios onto individual index cards. Students will team up with a partner to discuss how they would handle the issue. Students can share out with class also. Time Capsules or ME Box: Students decorate a paper towel tube or a box to be filled with special things. Ideas include a writing paper from the first week (possibly saying what they hope to learn in 3rd grade), a string that is measured to their height, a special item, and more. These capsules/boxes can be saved until the last week of school when students can compare their writing, their height, etc. Animal Guessing Game: A picture of an animal is taped to each child's back. Students must walk around the room and ask for clues as to their picture. Students can ask a multitude of questions but may not ask, "Is it a ________?" Recess Word Search Art Lessons: The first week of school is an excellent time to incorporate some wonderful art. These art pieces can be saved and displayed during Open House/Back to School Night. Lesson 1: A Unique Drawing Lesson See how one set of instructions can produce a multiple of different art designs. Lesson 2: Advanced Scribble Art An art lesson that incorporates math and problem solving skills. Lesson 3: Looking Out My Window Students will create an art project based on what they might see if they were to look out their window. Lesson 4: Art Tube for Storage/Transportation Students create tubes in which their art can be rolled up and placed inside for transport back and forth from school to home. |
