Descendants of Richard Warren

Generation No. 1

1. RICHARD1 WARREN was born Bef. 1590 in England, and died 1628 in Plymouth. He
married ELIZABETH /?/ (WIFE OF RICHARD WARREN) Bef. 1610 in London, England.

Notes for RICHARD WARREN:
The following passage is derived from "They Who Came - Bell Family Chronicles."

WARREN

Richard Warren, the first of the Warren name in America, sailed from Plymouth,
England in the historic "Mayflower" on 6 September 1620. He was not of the
Leyden company, but joined the Pilgrims from London, and he was one of the
signers of the Mayflower Compact. He was one of the third exploring party which
was surprised by the Indians on December 18th and was one of the first to land
in the New World at Plymouth on December 21st.

Under the land division of 1623, Richard Warren's apportionment was in the north
side of the town in a section which later became known as Wellingsley or
Hobshole, where he lived until his death in 1628.

By his contemporaries, Richard Warren was described as "grave Richard," "a man
of integrity, justice and uprightness, of piety and serious religion," and as "a
useful instrument during the short time he lived, bearing a deep share in the
difficulties and troubles of the plantation."

Richard's wife, Elizabeth, followed him to New England in the "Ann" in 1623,
accompanied by her daughters. She was a person of force and social position in
the community and often was referred to as "Mistress Elizabeth Warren," by no
means a common designation. Also, after the death of her husband in 1628, she
remained a widow all her life, which was unusual in those days. She died 2
October 1673 at more than ninety years of age. For some reason unknown, she was
not buried until twenty-two days after her death, when it was entered into the
records that she "having lived a godly life, came to her grave as a shoke of
corn, fully ripe."

9. *ELIZABETH4 CHURCH (*BENJAMIN3, *ELIZABETH2 WARREN, RICHARD1) was born Abt.
1665, and died 1691. She married WILLIAM LITTLE, SR. 1680.

Notes for *ELIZABETH CHURCH:
There appears to be two Elizabeth Churchs with the same parents. The first was
born about 1665, and the second was born on March 26, 1684. The first Elizabeth
Church married William Little, Sr. in 1680, and they moved to Virginia. Four
years later, in 1684, Benjamin Church and Alice Southworth had another daughter
whom they named Elizabeth, also.

There is no question about the children of Benjamin and Alice who were born
after 1673, starting with Thomas Church. If there were no children born before
1673, then Benjamin and Alice did not have children during the first five years
of their marriage (m. Dec. 26, 1667).

"The Thigpen Tribe" by Alice Whitley Smith, published in North Carolina, is one
of the references used to tie the Little family to Richard Warren of the
Mayflower. Quoted from page 231:
                              LITTLE
      "William Little, b. 1660, d. 1740; m. 1st: 1680, Elizabeth Church, b. ca.
1665, d. 1691, (dau. of Alice Southworth and Benjamin Church, b. ca. 1640, son
of Richard Church, b. ca. 1608, d. 12/27/1668; m. ca. 1636, Elizabeth Warren, d.
03/04/1670, dau. of Richard Warren and ?, his wife; said to be signer of the
Mayflower Compact.)
Transported from Mass. to Surry Co., VA where in 1682 he purchased land
from Edward Napkin."

William & Elizabeth's first child was born in 1681. Did William Little, Sr.
really marry Elizabeth, daughter of Benjamin Church and Alice Southworth?

      William & Elizabeth's children:

1) Elizabeth Little, b. 1681 (named for her mother?)
2) Alice Little (named for her mother's mother?)
3) William Little, Jr., b. 1685
4) John Little, b. 1687
5) Katherine Little, b. 1689 (named for her mother's sister, Catherine?)

Notes for *NANCY BELCHER:
The following passage is derived from information written in the story "If Only
That Old Table Could Talk" by Ima Whitman Franks. This story can be found at the
Newton Co., TX web site.

When Nancy's husband fled Georgia as a fugitive, she did not know that she would
ever see him again; however, within a few months, she received word from him
that he was now "William M. Davis" and he wanted his family to join him in East
Texas. With the help of a few loyal slaves, Nancy packed her sons and daughter
along with some their most prized possessions into a Conestoga wagon. Without a
backward glance at her beautiful plantation home, Nancy left a life of luxury to
follow her fugitive husband into the Mexican territory called Texas. They
traveled through Indian infested territory, stopping only to eat and bury a
small son along the way. Nancy reached her destination near the Sabine River in
1836. For many years, William and Nancy and their family prospered and lived a
happy life in the Davis Community.

Notes for WILLIAM M. DAVIS:
The following passage is derived from information written in the story "If Only
That Old Table Could Talk!" by Ima Whitman Franks. This story can be found at
the Newton Co., TX web site.

William Davis' true name was Winfield Moore. He unintentionally killed his
neighbor's son, a man by the name of Claiborne Forehand, in Burke County,
Georgia in January of 1834. While helping his neighbor at a chimney daubing,
Winfield was accused by the neighbor's son of making slanderous remarks about
his sister. In spite of Winfield's denial, Claiborne started a fight which the
whole Forehand family soon joined in. When Claiborne approached Winfield as if
to threaten his life, Winfield picked up the first object handy, a wooden chair,
and swinging it, knocked Claiborne Forehand to the ground. Claiborne's brothers
were going to kill Winfield, and knowing this, he managed to get away from them
and gallop home as quickly as possible on his horse. A friend brought word that
Winfield had indeed killed Claiborne by accident, and a warrant had been issued
for his arrest. He was advised to leave Georgia because of an unfair trial
situation. There were no witnesses other than the dead man's family. Winfield
hurriedly packed, told his wife and children goodbye, and left his family and
plantation behind. He came to Tejas Territory, changed his name to William M.
Davis, and was reunited with his wife and children in 1836. Many years later, in
1859, William was inadvertently found out and the Newton County Sheriff came to
his home to collect him. William asked one of his sons to keep the sheriff
company while he went to his room to gather some clothes to take with him. The
men heard a shot ring out from inside the bedroom. Winfield Moore aka William M.
Davis had taken his life. The Forehand family had risen to high levels of
government in Georgia and William knew that he would no more get a fair trial in
1859 than he would have gotten one in 1834.
