Continuing the Legacy

18 years before destruction of the first Death Star

"Biggs, come see your baby sister!"

Biggs Darklighter looked up from his holo game. He didn want to see any baby sister right now. The game was just getting good! He sighed and got to his feet. "Cute mom real cute."

"Biggs!"

"Sorry!"

Biggs decided right then and there this kid had to go! He was 10 years old and had enjoyed being an only child. Yup this new kid was history.

18 years later

Alta Darklighter looked at the holomessage with dark eyes. It was from her brother, Biggs. He was coming home for a visit and had good news.

"Alta, what wrong?"

"Nothing mother. Hey have you got the new holomessage from Biggs?"

"No. What did he say?"

"He coming home for a while. He said he had some news to tell us."

Ok Alta thought I wonder what Biggs has up his sleeve.

She shrugged and went back to her room to sit down. She have to tell Luke about this. She decided that since she had nothing better to do why not tell him now.

"Mom!!!"

"Yes Alta?"

"Can I go to Luke for a few hours?"

"Yes but be back before supper starts!"

"Ok. Bye mom!"

Alta ran to the garage and hopped into her landspeeder and took off toward the Lars homestead.

In a few minutes Alta pulled up to the garage where Luke usually was. She got out and walked in.

"Luke are you in here?" she called.

"Yeah. Just a minute!" answered a voice.

Alta bounced up and down until a head popped up from behind some hunk of metal.

"Oh hi Darky!"

"Hi Luke. Did you get a message from Biggs?"

"No why?" Luke asked coming around the heap wiping grease off his hands.

"Oh. Well I just thought you might like to know he coming home in a few day and well that it."

"Biggs is coming home? For how long?"

"I don know. All he said was that he coming home and had some big news to tell us."

"Well. So when he comes send him over to me. Alright?"

"He would have come over even if you didn tell me to tell him!"

"I know that!"

Alta shook her head. "You e as crazy as my brother. So what are you working on?"

"Oh it my landspeeder again."

"The left turbine convert coil?"

"Yup. As usual."

"Luke why not get a new one? I sure someone has one for cheap? Why not try Fixer?"

"I know. Hey I kinda like working on it. It gives me something to do."

Alta shook her head. "Need help?"

"Sure. Um hand me the multi-tool will ya?" Alta crossed to the side of the speeder Luke was on and rummaged around in the toolbox. She found the tool and handed it to Luke.

"Biggs would enjoy this. That and then he challenge you to a race when you were finished."

"A race? Sounds like fun!"

"Oh no Luke I not racing!"

"Oh come on Alta!"

Luke pulled himself out from under the speeder. "Let see if you have you brother luck."

"Luck? You just can bear to say that hes a better racer than you!"

"I know but come on. Let see what you got."

"No I won race you. Your speeder is in a mess."

"Then lets race skyhoppers."

"NO!"

"Why?"

"If Biggs found out that I had used his skyhopper he kill me!"

"How would he find out?"

"He a big brother. He has ways, Luke!"

"I know that! Listen how about we take the Beggars Canyon route?"

"NO! I can hardly fly the skyhopper, much less conquer Beggars Canyon!"

"Darky your no fun."

"Luke getting killed isn my idea of fun."

Luke stood up. "Ok. My speeder is fixed, for the moment. How about we race back to your house? I could eat supper there and then come home."

"Well ok I guess."

"GREAT! GO get your speeder. Meet me around the front of the garage. I gonna go tell Aunt Beru where I going then I l meet you there."

"Ok I guess."

Luke ran out of the garage as Alta took off toward her speeder.

When she got to the front of the garage she saw Luke already in his.

"Hey no fair!"

"What?"

"You have Biggs speeder!"

"No I don ! This one is mine!"

"Um no that is Biggs scratch down the side. I put it there, I should know."

Alta looked down the side of the speeder she had jumped in. It was, no doubt, her brothers.

"Opps! Sorry."

"That no fair!"

"Why not?"

"Because, oh never mind You ready?"

"Um I guess. This is my first race so bear with me!"

"Ok I l even give you a head start."

"Ok great."

Luke pulled up beside Alta. "Ok ready, set go!"

Alta let the speeder loose. It took off like a scared bantha. "Oh my!"

Luke started out seeing that, in case he wanted to loose right then and there, he better go.

"Alta I though you said you e never raced before?" Luke said via the com pick up in the speeder.

"Well I never have."

"Well your doing good right now!"

"Thanks. Now shut up and race!"

Luke smiled to himself and poured on the speed. Alta still remained in front of him by a good distance but he was gaining.

All of the sudden Alta kicked up the power and her speeder took off.

"Hey!" Luke called.

Alta laughed and headed toward her house.

"HAHA I won!"

Alta climbed out of her speeder as Luke pulled his up beside her .

"I know," Luke said in a small voice.

"So how does it feel to know you e lost to both Darklighters?"

"Not funny!"

"Come on. Let go inside. I sure dinner is almost ready."

"Ok. Can I clean up before we eat? That race left me all gritty."

"Sure come on."

Luke followed Alta into her house.

"Mom!" she called.

"Yes?"

"We e home!"

"Ok. Dinner is almost ready!"

"Ok. I gonna clean up and be right there."

Alta walked into her room and showed Luke the resher unit. She walked over to her closet and pulled out a new shirt. She took of the old one, which was filthily from the race, and put the new one on.

Luke emerged a few moments later, looking the same as when he went in. Only his face was a little cleaner.

"DO you want a clean shirt?" Alta asked over her shoulder. She was sitting in front of her mirror combing out her long, black hair.

"NO I fine," Luke replied.

"Are you sure? I can go get on of Biggs . I sure he won mind."

"Well I guess so. Fine ok."

"Ok I l be right back."

Alta walked down the hall to her brother room and opened the door. It still looked the same as when he left for the Academy.

She crossed to where Biggs kept his clothes and opened the drawer. Alta looked in and found a shirt that would fit Luke the way he liked it. She picked up the shirt and returned to her room.

When she got back she threw the shirt at Luke and told him to hurry.

"Ok! I will!" Luke smiled and pulled off his shirt. Alta closed her eyes and giggled.

"What?!" Luke asked.

"Nothing," she replied.

"Yeah sure!"

"No nothing. Funny joke I thinking of."

"Oh yeah I believe you!"

"Come on Luke!"

"What?!"

Alta sneered and playfully hit Luke on the arm. When he was finally ready and tackled Alta back.

"HEY!" Alta squealed.

Luke had her in a big bear hug and wasn about to let go

"Hey come on Luke we gotta go!"

"Ok! Ok!"

Luke let her go and smiled.

"Funny Skywalker! Real funny!"

Luke smiled again.

<Good lord I love that smile.> Alta thought.

Alta face turned and she frowned.

"What?" Luke asked.

"Nothing."

<Did I just think that?> Alta asked herself.

"Come on," Alta said. She walked out of the room, Luke following her.

"So Luke, how are your aunt and uncle?"

"Oh their fine. Busy as ever," Luke replied with a mouth full of food.

Alta snickered and fell silent.

<He so cute!> she thought.

<So? Not by much!>

Alta shook her head and smiled to ward off any questions from her family.

"Well I e been planning on visiting your Aunt soon, Luke," Alta mother said.

"I sure she be happy to see you. We don get much company out there."

"I understand. I l drop by in a few days, ok?"

"Sure I l tell Aunt Beru."

<NO!>

<YES! Alta just do it!>

"Luke would you like to stay the night?" Alta blurted out.

Luke stopped eating and Alta mother and father looked at her in surprise.

"Um well," Luke murmured.

Alta bit her lower lip and looked down at her plate with interest.

"Sure why not?" Alta father answered for Luke.

Luke looked at Alta and said, "Sure I guess so."

Alta looked up and smiled.

<YES!> she thought.

Luke returned the smile and continued to eat.

Dinner finished quickly after Luke decided to spend the night. After it was over Alta took Luke back to her room and closed the door.

Luke walked in and took a seat in one of the chairs. Alta jumped on her bed and sat crossed legged, looking at Luke.

<Look at that profile!> she thought.

"So," Alta asked, "what do you want to do?"

"I don know. Whats there to do?" Luke asked.

"Well I don have much but Biggs has a ton of holo games in his room. We could take his player and the games and go to the main room or we can come back here."

Luke shrugged. "Ok sure sounds like fun!"

Alta smiled weakly and got up. "Come on. You can pick out some games to play."

Luke stood and crossed to where Alta stood. He took her hand and Alta blushed. She smiled again and led Luke out of her room and down the hall still holding hands.

"So this is Biggs room?" Luke asked.

"Yup I afraid so." Alta replied.

"Cool!" Luke exclaimed. He found the holo games and made his way to them dropping Alta hand. Alta followed like a little lost bantha cub.

"Pick anyone you want. I l get the player. Where you want to play?"

"Um how about your room."

"Ok. I l take the player there. Just bring the games when you e done."

"Ok sure."

Alta frowned and picked up the holo player and headed out of the room.

Back in her own room Alta plugged in the player alone.

After it was ready she pulled up to chairs and got everything set up.

Alone she sat and thought about what she was trying to accomplish.

Alta sighed and sat in one of the chair and waited for Luke.

A few moments later Luke came in carrying about ten games.

"You ready?" Alta asked, calmly, even though her heart was racing.

"Yeah."

"What game do you want to start with?"

"Um I don care."

Luke reached down to where he had put the games and picked one at random and stuck it in the player.

"You going to play Alta?"

"Luke you know me I hate holo games!"

"Oh come on, party pooper!"

"Fine! Ok give me the remote!"

Luke smiled and handed Alta the other remote.

"Oh this one is hard," Alta commented.

"How do you know?"

"Biggs showed it to me."

"I thought you didn like holo games?"

"Hey! He was really proud of this when he got it! He wanted to show it to me so I let him."

"How hard is it?"

"Very hard!"

"Ok."

Luke started the game and got ready. Alta steadied herself and stole a sidelong glance at Luke. His tongue was between his teeth. She smiled and tried to hide her giggle.

As the game started Alta tried to keep up with Luke but never having played a holo game ever before she quickly fell behind. And yet she found something out. This was fun.

Alta let out a small yelp as her ship hit the sidewall and crashed. Luke yelled in victory. Alta started to laugh and Luke threw a sidelong glance her way.

"What are you laughing at Darky?"

"You!"

"What?"

"You are so funny!"

"Oh yeah? I l give you something to laugh at!"

Luke started toward Alta. Her eyes got big and she tried to squirm out of the chair. When Luke reached her he started to tickle her sides.

"Luke!!! STOP!!!"

"Why? Who laughing now funny girl? Hua?"

"Luke!!!! OK STOP!!! I L STOP LAUGHING!!!!"

Luke smiled and stopped. Alta grinned and tackled Luke. They both fell to the floor and Alta tickled him.

"ALTA NO FAIR!!!!"

Alta laughed and tickled harder. Luke got his arms around her waist and pushed her off. He rolled over and looked at her. They were both breathing hard and smiling. At that moment Luke did something Alta had secretly been dreaming of.

Luke leaned over, put his free hand behind Alta head, and kissed her passionately.

Alta opened her eyes in surprise. Then she slowly closed them, savoring the moment.

After a few seconds Luke broke the kiss. Alta sucked in her lower lip and stared at the ground. Luke put his hand under her chin and gently pulled her head up and met her gaze.

"I don know where that came from. I sorry if I hurt you."

"Oh no! Not at all!"

Luke smiled again and let go of Alta head.

"I guess we better get to bed. It late. I think Biggs might come tomorrow," Alta said, breaking the silence.

Luke stood up and helped Alta.

"Um I think you can sleep anywhere. The floor, a chair, the bed if you want."

"Don you sleep in your bed?" Luke asked smiling.

"Yes but if you want you can have it."

"Well, do you have anything I can wear to sleep in?" Luke asked.

Alta crossed to her dresser drawers and pulled out an oversized shirt and threw it at Luke.

"Thanks," Luke said.

Alta nodded and pulled out her nightshirt. "You can change in the resher if you want."

Luke smiled and walked to the other room.

Alta sighed and sat down on her bed. She pulled off her shirt and pants and pulled on the oversized nightshirt. After she was done thoughts drifted into her head.

<Alta! He wouldn do that! Not with you!>

<Stop! Stop this talk right now!>

Luke stepped out of the fresher and smiled. The shirt fell down to a little above mid thigh and was tight all the way around. "It fits."

Alta giggled. "Close enough."

Luke crossed to where Alta sat on her bed and took her head in his hands. He bent down and kissed her again. Alta shuddered and then rose up to deepen the kiss.

Luke slowly pushed Alta over on her back and lay on top of her kissing her softly.

Luke broke the kiss and rolled off Alta, smiling. Alta smiled back.

Luke leaned over again and kissed her deeply. Alta even thought she could feel his tongue in her mouth. He pulled her close and held her tightly.

Luke broke the kiss again and looked at her.

"What? What happened?" Alta asked, alarmed. She didn want this to end, not yet.

"Nothing. I can do this with you," Luke replied.

"No! No, I don mind!" Alta exclaimed, trying not to seem to eager to have him near her.

Luke smiled and ran his hands through Alta hair. "No this is wrong. You e like a sister to me."

"I am?"

"Yes."

Alta sighed. "Could you change your mind?"

Luke laughed. "Well ok."

Alta smiled softly. Luke leaned over and kissed her again. They were both to young to do this. Luke broke the kiss yet again and ran his tongue along Alta jaw line.

"Luke we can go all the way. You know it stops at this."

"I know. Let just savor the moment ok?"

"Fine with me."

Luke kissed Alta again.

In a few minutes Alta let loose and rolled over on Luke. Surprised, Luke pushed Alta off roughly. He looked at her with wide eyes.

After a few seconds of staring at each other Alta broke the silence.

"Um. I guess we should get to sleep."

"Yeah. I guess."

"So do you want to sleep in the bed or the floor or what?"

"I don care. How about we share the bed?"

Alta hesitated then agreed.

Alta pulled the covers over her and Luke and turned so that her back was to Luke .

After a few minutes Luke was sound asleep and Alta was once again alone. She lied there and thought about what she had just done with her friend. It was nothing. Neither of them were harmed, but Alta still felt funny as if she had done something bad.

Alta sighed and decided to forget it. She smiled and fell asleep.

When Alta woke up Luke was gone and she was alone.

She sighed and sat up.

"Good morning, sleepy head," a familiar voice said.

Alta rubbed her eyes and looked at the source of the voice. It was her brother Biggs.

"BIGGS!!!!" she exclaimed.

"In the flesh."

Alta jumped out of her bed and ran to hug her brother. Biggs smiled and returned the hug.

"I missed you Biggs!"

"I missed you to Alta!"

Alta smiled. "Did you see Luke?"

"Yeah. He is downstairs having breakfast. I understand he spent the night."

"Yeah. Nothing happened."

"Ok. I trust you and Luke."

Alta smiled again.

"Well get dressed. I want to know what been happening!"

"Ok I l be down in a few minutes."

"Great see you then."

Alta dressed in a hurry and ran downstairs.

"Good morning Darky."

"Hi Luke."

"Good morning Alta. What would you like for breakfast?" Alta mother said.

"Nothing right now. I not hungry."

"So Alta what has been happening since I e been gone?"

"Well I beat Luke in a speeder race yesterday."

"That was only because my converter coil was busted," Luke spoke up smiling.

Alta smirked and stuck her tongue out at Luke. "It always like that!"

Luke smiled back.

"So Luke what been up with you?"

"Not much. Same boring old stuff I normally do only you e not here."

Biggs shrugged.

"Well your back."

"For a while."

"What do you mean?"

"Well I was awarded first mate of the ship Rand Ecliptic."

Alta turned to face her brother and Luke dropped her food.

"You what?" they both said at the same time.

Biggs smiled. "I the first mate."

Alta smiled and hugged her brother again and Luke chuckled.

"I so proud of you!" Alta said.

"Yeah great going!" Luke added.

Biggs found Luke the next day at Fixer shop in Tosche station.

"Luke! Hey!"

"Hi Biggs."

Biggs walked over and stood next to Luke.

"Listen I think you might need to know the truth."

"What do you mean?"

"I not going with the Rand Ecliptic. I joining the Rebellion!"

Luke eyes went wide. "You e what?!"

Biggs sighed. "I joining the Rebellion against the Empire."

Luke jaw dropped and he was speechless.

"But why "

"I just... I don like the way the Empire is running things. I wish that you could come!"

"Yeah so do I! Any thing would be better than staying on this rock."

"I know what you mean. Listen I have to leave very soon."

"What do you mean Biggs?"

"Will you tell Alta that, if I don return, she has to carry on the Darklighter name."

Luke was getting worried. "I don understand."

"Maybe you will in time. I must go. They need me."

Luke sighed. "I l tell her. I wish you didn have to go."

"Listen I know what you mean. I rather die in battle for something I need rather than die here on Tatoonie."

"I think I get it now."

"Listen Luke I need to get going. Please tell Alta what I said."

"I will. Good luck."

"Maybe we l meet again someday."

"Maybe."

Luke hopped in his speeder and sat there. After a few moments he started up the ship and headed toward the Darklighter house.

Luke hopped out and ran up to the door of Alta house. He knocked on the door and waited for an answer.

Alta mom answered the door wiping tears from her eyes.

"Mrs. Darklighter!" Luke exclaimed. "What wrong?"

Mrs. Darklighter stopped crying and answered Luke. "Its Alta. She she gone!"

"What?!"

"She left this morning. She left a note saying that she would not be back. She also said that if she didn come back that Biggs had to continue on the Darklighter name."

Luke gasped. "So you mean Alta is gone?"

Mrs. Darklighter nodded.

Luke dropped his head and though about what had just happened.

Biggs and Alta were gone on missions. Luke was left alone on Tatoonie.
