winemaking

Winemaking is one of my current hobbies. I have made many kinds of fruit wines, a couple of vegetable wines and not as many grape wines (I know that grapes are fruit, but for the purpose of winemaking, they get their own category). You won't get the how to's from me, but I will refer you to someone more experienced...the wine goddess. I will tell you how I got into winemaking, what I do with it now, and maybe a few recipes.

Terry Garey, is the wine goddess, she has written a comprehensive step by step book, called The joy of Home Winemaking that will lead you to bliss (drunken bliss?).

I began making wine in the spring of 1999, because a couple of my friends were also making it for winter solstice. More specifically, we made dandelion wine. It was sweet, syrupy, and needless to say, barely drinkable. In the meantime, i had come across Garey's book, that helped immensely. I tried a couple of easy wines from juice concentrates. Since then, I take full advantage of every fruit, vegetable, flower or whatever else is offered to me or I find.

Last xmas, many of my friends and family got garlic wine. I realize that this does not sound palletable, but it is meant not to drink, but to be used in cooking. I will add this recipe later, I know you can't wait!
