review: 03.30.01- Waxwing, Kill Sadie/31 Knots, Aveo, Carissa's Wierd at the Paradox Theater and Graceland in Seattle

Last night, James, Alex and I drove up to Seattle to see Waxwing. The openers were kind of snores, in my opinion. But Waxwing was amazing. The music was tight and clever, the lyrics was searing, and the singer's voice was really gorgeous.

Then we rushed over to Graceland to catch the remnants of the Carissa's Wierd CD Release show, featuring Aveo, Automation and 31 Knots. I'd never heard Automation before, but the other three bands are particular favorites of mine right now.

We missed 31 Knots, but caught Aveo in mid-set. I swear, the Seattle crowd really puzzles me. There was tons of energy and enthusiasm, that's for sure. But I got kicked and pushed around a bit at both the Paradox Theater and Graceland (which NEVER happens in Portland- the people here have an unspoken mandatory personal bubble that is something like three feet in radius). And there were some weirdo jock boys in nylon shorts and leather clogs swinging their beers around and dancing like it's 1975. I had a feeling that maybe they were there to take in the cream-puff looks of the lead singer from Aveo. No matter. My eyes were mostly closed as I took in the catchy, sweet and desperate sounds.

Towards the end of Carissa's Wierd's set, I was actually in a great deal of pain. My back was aching and my feet were cramping up. I was really hot and sort of naseaous. But it was worth standing there feeling that wrecked to get to listen to Carissa's Wierd.

Same show, different viewpoint here.
