His First

By Ashley Hall

Everyone is in Koenma’s office, still tired and yawning.  Hiei and Kurama were standing up leaning against the wall.  Yusuke and Kuwabara sat in chairs sleeping when Koenma step in the room followed by his ogre carrying a small girl about one or two years old.  Koenma slapped Yusuke and Kuwabara awake as Botan took the sleeping child and held her in her arms.

Yusuke jumped up, “What do you want now pacifier breathe?”  (Ohh, those are fightin words!)

“Well pacifier breath wanted to gather everyone.  Now Botan would you put the child down on the floor between them?”  Koenma asked as Botan put the child among the guys on the floor.

“What’s with the baby?”  Kuwabara asked.

“Her original mother abandoned her and we can’t let her stay a lone.  We also don’t know what this little demon is capable of or what type of demon she is.  We did some test on her but every time it came up negative.  We do know that she has dark powers and we want to get rid of them before she is influenced to kill.”  Koenma said.

“So, you just called us here for that?”  A very angry Hiei said.  (Who all wants Hiei to kill Koenma?  Hold on, I have enough tickets for everybody.  No need to shove.)

“No, we need someone to look after her and one of you is going to do that.”  Botan said.

“Why don’t you look after it?”  Yusuke said as he grumbled.  “I don’t want a child to look after.”  (Yes, the child would be dead in a matter of 12 hours.)

“Well you guys wont get to choose who becomes a father.  She’ll choose for you.  You all have an equal chance of being a father.”  Koenma said.

“I’m a fighter, not some child’s babysitter.”  Hiei said as he started to walk to the door.

“Stop Hiei.  You have one out of four chances that you wont become one.”  Botan said.

“When she first opens her eyes, she’ll see one of the four of you and the first she sees will become her adopted parent.”  Koenma said as the girl began to move.

The girl yawned and moved her hands to her eyes to rub them.  She yawned again.  A blurry figure came to her eyes as she smiled.

“So who is it?”  Kurama asked.

They watched the girl raise her arms that signaled she wanted to be held.  Her arms were out stretched to... (Who? Who?)

“Hiei?”  Koenma said in shock.  (You have to be kidding me!)

“I wont do it.  I said I didn’t want to be someone’s babysitter.”  He said as he turned around and started to walk towards the door.

The girl began to whine and cry.  “D-daddy.”  (Uhh Ohh)

Hiei stopped and looked back at her.  She was still reaching for him.  He walked slowly towards her and stood in front of her.

“I’m not your father.  So get that idea out of your small head.”  Hiei said as he stared down at her.

The girl raised her arms higher and called him daddy.  Kurama walked over and picked her up.  She fussed and kicked.  Kurama didn’t want to drop her so he gave her to Hiei.  She wasn’t that big of a child either.  She had black hair and purple eyes.  Hiei showed his teeth and growled as Yusuke and Kuwabara made fun of the situation.

“Hiei, a father?  Ah how cute, they look alike.”  Was one of there comments.  (Kill them, Kill them!)

“Do you have a death wish!  You know as well I do that I didn’t want to become this child’s father!”  Hiei yelled.  “I don’t even know what to do with it.” (Yes, they have a death wish, kill them!)

“I’ll help you as much as I can.”  Kurama said.  “At school, I can take this child development class.”  (Good ‘ol Kurama.)

Yusuke and Kuwabara left laughing as the two demons stood there.  Koenma walked over to them and held up a book.  (Darn, he didn’t kill them.)

“What’s this for?”  Hiei asked taking the book.

“You will write down the things she does every day.”  He said as he went back to his desk.  “Now move along, I have a lot of work to do and I can’t work with that child in the room.

The two left carrying the little girl.  Kurama said they should give her a name.  Hiei had suggested ‘Neocene’ but Kurama wouldn’t allow her to be named that.  They finally decided that she would be called Zi.  The two finally got to their apartment and sat down on the couch as they set the girl on the floor.  (I LIKE THE NAME Zi.)

“What do we do now?”  Kurama asked.

“I thought you were supposed to know.”  Hiei said.

“Maybe we should find that girl Yusuke likes.  She’ll probably know what to do.”  Kurama said.  (You mean Keiko?)

Hiei picked up the girl once again and the two decided to go to Yusuke to search out Keiko.  The two arrived to Yusuke’s home about noon.  When they walked in Kuwabara, Keiko, and Yusuke sat on a couch, apparently still laughing about the child’s choice.  (Come on Hiei, just cut off their dumb heads!)

Hiei walked up behind them and knocked their heads together.  (Well I even could have done better then that...ah no no, you can put your sword away Hiei, I wish to keep my head.

“What the hell?”  He said as he grabbed his head.

“Oh what a cute little girl, you shouldn’t swear around her or she might pick up that bad habit.”  Keiko said.

“Like she can understand what we’re talking about.”  Yusuke said.

“Bad, bad.”  Zi said as she grabbed a hold of Hiei’s shirt caller.  (The little tot has a mouth!)

“That little brat.”  Yusuke said as Kuwabara fell off of the couch laughing.  (Is that the best you can come up with?)

“Oh, how cute, may I hold her Hiei?” Keiko asked.

“I don’t care.”  Hiei said as he held her out to Keiko.

Zi laughed as Keiko tickled her.

            “What’s her name?”  She asked.

“We called her Zi.”  Kurama said.  (A lot better then Nonsense or something like that.)

“What a nice name.”  Keiko said as she sat down on the couch with her.

“Oh, we came looking for you Keiko to ask you some questions on how to take care of her.  I must say, neither of us has ever taken care of a child before.”  Kurama said sitting on an arm of a chair.  (Hide the shinny stuff, Yoko might just join the party.)

“Oh, well you have to feed her, change her, and bathe her.”  She began.

            “Change?”  Hiei asked looking up.

“Yes, you’ll have to keep clean.  She doesn’t look old enough to be potty trained so you’ll have to buy dippers.  You’ll have to keep sharp objects out of her reach as well as small ones.  You should keep your valuables out of reach also.  What kind of toys do you have for her to play with?”  Keiko asked as Zi grabbed onto her hair and began to pull.   (Especially your stolen shinny collection Kurama, Yoko would kill you if she got a hold of that.)

“We don’t have anything for her yet.”  Kurama said.

“We have some old stuffed animals lying around the house.  Come by here tomorrow and I’ll let her have the ones I find.”  Kuwabara said.  (A guy with stuff animals?  I wonder if he has any barbi dolls too.)

            “Ok then.”  Kurama said.

“Oh, laughing boy.  You’re watching her tomorrow.  I have errands to run and I can’t take her with.”  Hiei said as Yusuke stopped laughing.  (The girl’s death sentence.)

Zi had stopped fiddling with Keiko’s hair and was sitting on the couch next to Yusuke.  She crossed her arms and made a face similar to his.  (How fun.  She likes you Yusuke.)

Yusuke looked over and saw the girl do the same.  He moved an arm and so did she.  “Squirt.”

            “Squirt.”  She said mimicking.

“Stop coping you little brat!”  Yusuke yelled.

“Op oping you ittle brat.”  She said.

“Haha, I can say it better then you!”  Yusuke said as he claimed victory.

She looked at him and stuck her thumbs in her ears and her fingers spread, squinting her eyes and sticking out her tong, “Mmmmmmm!”  (Ohh!  Beat that!)

“I guess that this demon isn’t afraid of the spirit detective.”  Kuwabara said.  “You better watch out Urameshi, she’s gona beat you down when she gets older.”  Kuwabara said teasing him.  (Yaya!  Maybe she’ll kill Yusuke!)

“Ya ya.”  Yusuke said as he leaned back on the chair.

The two left after setting the arrangement for Zi to stay.  That night at supper, Kurama and Hiei had trouble.  Zi didn’t want to hold her spoon and when she did, food went everywhere including on the two demons.  (Buy lots, and lots of hairnets!)

After supper Kurama and Hiei were getting tired from the little demons games.  They set up things they didn’t want Zi to get a hold of or hurt herself with.  They gave up when she began to yawn.  Kurama and Hiei made a small bed for her on the couch to sleep in.  They set her down and she fell asleep a short while after that.  The two men went there separate ways to go to their rooms on different sides of the house.  (You guys are just going to leave Zi in the dark?)

About two o’clock in the morning Kurama woke to the sounds of Zi crying.  He got up and went to see what is wrong.  He flipped on the light and she sat there shaking.  (Kurama to the rescue.)

“What’s wrong squirt?  You hungry?”  Kurama asked as he picked her up and rocked her in his arms.

Zi shook her head as he sat down on the couch and laid her down on the cushion.

“You have to go back to sleep, I have school tomorrow and I need my sleep.”  Kurama said.

She whined when he got up.

Kurama turned and smiled, “Oh, now I see what you want.”  Kurama said picking her up.  (She needs to be changed, I know it!)

Hiei was asleep in his bed when he heard someone knocking.  “What is it?  I’m trying to sleep.”  He said angrily as he opened his door.  (Why go to Hiei?)

Kurama put Zi into his arms and yawned, “She’s lonely and I need to get back to sleep.”   Kurama walked off down the hall to get to his room.  (Oh darn and I wanted to see Kurama’s face.)

Hiei stood there and closed his door as he sat on his bed half asleep, half awake.  He put her down on one side of the bed and he went to the other and crawled into bed to sleep. (Bad boy!)

The next morning Hiei woke to the sun as it shinned in his eyes.  He rolled over to see Zi sleeping with her thumb in her mouth.  He sat up and tried to think how she got into his room.  He looked at his clock and knew Kurama had already left for school.  He took the thumb out of her mouth and picked her up and walked out to the other room.  He laid her on the couch and began to make his breakfast.  (How nice of him, wait a minute!  Nice!)

Zi began to move and she got down from the couch and walked out into the kitchen.  She tugged on Hiei’s pant leg and looked down at her.

“You’re hungry aren’t you?”  He asked picking her up.  (No, I’m just here to make your life a living hell!  Yes I’m hungry!)

He walked over to the table and put her in a chair.  He sat down and without think.  Started to put the spoon in the jar and putting it in her mouth.  He realized what he was doing and continued.  At least now he didn’t have to worry about cleaning up the kitchen and his hair again.  He had received a baby bottle from Yusuke when he was a child and fed her milk. (Hey, I think Hiei’s doing a little bit to well for someone who doesn’t know how to take care of a child.  You have a problem with it.  Hey, just remember, it’s my fanfic and I believe that Hiei should have some fatherly instinct.)  He cleaned her off and he ate some breakfast himself.  Hiei picked her up and then left with Zi to drop her off and Yusuke.  (Darn, I can’t think of anything funny to write and I can’t pick on Hiei or I’ll get my head chopped off.)

When he arrived, Kuwabara had a box of stuff in the middle of the room and Yusuke was sitting on the couch.

Hiei walked in Kuwabara looked back.  Hiei chuckled at the sight of them.  (I have gone nuts, Hiei, chuckling?)

“I forgot, don’t you also have school today?”  Hiei asked setting Zi down.  (Yep, just skipping.)

“Nope, the school has gas problems and they’re working on the pipes.”  Kuwabara said as he noticed Zi looking at the box. (I was close.)

He crawled onto the floor and opened it.

“This is the only kind of toy that wasn’t broken.  The others are going out the dump.”  Kuwabara said.

He held up a stuffed rabbit and Zi squealed.  (A rabbit?)

“I’m leaving her with you.  She better not have a scratch on her head or I’ll have to beat your ass.”  Hiei said.

“Ohh, the father’s going to beat my ass, I’m so scared.”  Yusuke said as he rolled over laughing.  (Choke on your tong, you leave Hiei alone!)

Zi got up and ran towards Hiei, “Bye bye Daddy.”  (You left me to die here!)

He patted her on the head.  “I’ll be back soon, give them a tuff time.” (Don’t yell at me, so I gave Hiei a soft spot for the little girl, but put your self in his position, wouldn’t you give in to her little charm.  And no, put your sword away that you are imagining!)

Hiei left and Zi played with the stuffed bunny.  Yusuke really wasn’t paying attention to her.  (Ohh, Hiei’s gona kill him!)  Kuwabara was watching T.V. and Zi had disappeared.  Hiei was due to come back around any moment.  (Won’t this be fun.)

“Hey Kuwabara, get Zi.  Hiei’s gona be back in a minute.” Yusuke yelled to him.

“What are you talking about Urameshi?  She’s in there with you!”  Kuwabara yelled back.  (Uhh Ohh.)

“She’s not with you?  Oh shit!”  Yusuke yelled.

Yusuke came running out of the kitchen,  “Don’t just sit there, and help me find her!”  Yusuke ran into his room, clothes everywhere, piles and piles of junk.  (Kind of reminds me of my room but without the dead animals, wait I take that back, he does have them on the floor of his closet.)

He started to through clothes off his floor and most of them landing in his white hamper that was in front of the door.  Kuwabara was looking other places in the house when Yusuke’s front door opened to a short demon.  (Ohh, they’re dead!)

“Oh, Hiei, didn’t know you would be back so soon.”  Yusuke said walking out to the living room.  (Kill him, kill him!)

“Why are you acting like that?”  Hiei asked the sweating Yusuke.

“Ah, it’s nothing, we just can’t find Zi.”  Yusuke said.

“What did you say?”  Hiei asked.  (On the count of three run!)

“Ah yeah, we kinda took our eyes off her and she sort of disappeared.” Yusuke said.  (One.)

“I suggest you find her.”  Hiei said.  (Two.)

Yusuke began to step back when a small voice came from Yusuke’s room.  “Daddy!”  Zi yelled as her head popped up from Yusuke’s hamper.  (Ah man, I wanted to see Hiei go retro on Yusuke too, *I don’t know what retro means, just thought it sounded cool.* Hey, where’s Kuwabara anyway?)  “I did what you told me too, give them a hard time.”  She said as she ran towards Hiei.

He bent down and picked her up.  Yusuke almost had a nervous breakdown.  (Hiei should of killed him.)  Hiei left feeling satisfied with what Zi did.  He walked home and was stopped by Botan and Koenma who was with this strange woman.

“I see the child’s alive.”  Koenma said.

“I can keep her alive.”  Hiei said.  “Who’s she.”

“Hiei, this is the girls mother.”  Botan said.

“I thought you said she was abandoned.”  Hiei said.

“Funny thing, she was just held up somewhere.”  Koenma said.  “We need the child.”

Hiei looked at her and then to the mother.  He put Zi down on the ground and pushed her forward.

            “Daddy?”  Zi said turning around.

“We’ll see each other again.  How about in ten years?”  Hiei said patting her on the head.

“Ok.”  She walked to the woman and she disappeared.  (Ah, at least he got to say his goodbye.  *SNIFF SNIFF* Who am I kidding, poor Hiei.)

Hiei walked home and found Kurama resting on the couch.  He opened his eyes to see Hiei without Zi.

            “Koenma see you?”  He asked.

            “Yes.”  Hiei said.

“You’ll miss her won’t you?”  Kurama asked as he sat up.

            “Maybe.”  Hiei said.

“You can cry if you want.”  Kurama teased.

Hiei picked up a pillow and threw it a Kurama, “Shut up.”  (Aren’t they the best of friends, hey!  Yoko never showed up.  And I wanted him to steel some shinny stuff too!)

“It’s ok, we all have our soft spots.”  Kurama said.

“Guess so.  I feel like beating up Yusuke, want to join me.”  Hiei asked evilly.

“Sure.”  Kurama agreed as the two left the apartment.  (Oh I am evil.)
