Chapter 7

 

Unexpected Return

 

                The next morning, Zoey was in the kitchen helping Kagome’s mother with baking cookies.  “What goes in next?  What goes in next?”  Zoey asked as she bounced on the chair she was standing on.

 

                “We need the flour then we can add the chips.” Miss. Higurashi said.

 

                Zoey jumped off of the chair and ran towards the cabinet.  Inu Yasha walked in and sat down at the table.  He watched as he seen Zoey grab a white bag and a bag something that smelled sweet.  “Hey squirt, what are you doing?” He asked.

 

                Zoey smiled and gave Miss. Higurashi the flour.  “I’m making cookies.”

 

                “Cookies?”  Inu Yasha asked.

 

                “Ya, they’re yummy.”  Zoey smiled as she watched Miss. Higurashi put the flour in and stir.  “Grandma, can I let daddy taste the dough?”  She asked.

 

                Miss. Higurashi got out a spoon and put a little dough on it.  “Sure sweet heart.”

 

                Zoey grabbed the spoon and jumped off of the chair.  She ran towards Inu Yasha and gave him the spoon.  “Try it; try it!”  Zoey said happily as she jumped next to Inu Yasha.

 

                Inu Yasha nodded and licked the dough.  “Hey, this is good.”  He said as he plopped the spoon into him mouth.  Zoey smiled and ran back towards the counter.

 

                “Can I add the chocolate chips? Can I?”  Zoey asked.

 

                “Yes, hold on.”  Miss. Higurashi said as she finished stirring the dough and gave Zoey the opened bag of chocolate chips.

 

                Zoey poured it into the bowl and tried to stir, “It’s too hard.”

 

                “Let me do it.”  Miss. Higurashi said as she took the spoon away from her.

 

                Inu Yasha and Zoey’s ears twitched and they both turned towards the door to see Kagome.  Zoey smiled and ran towards her.  “Mommy, mommy.  I’m making cookies!”  She said happily.

 

                “Hey Zoey, I was thinking, would you like to go to the fair today?”  Kagome asked with a smiled.

 

                “Only if daddy goes.”  Zoey said.

 

                Kagome looked up to Inu Yasha and frowned.  “I only have enough for one adult bracelet and one child bracelet.”

 

                “I can lend you some money dear.”  Miss. Higurashi said.

 

                “It’s OK.”  Inu Yasha said.

 

                “No, I insist.”  Miss. Higurashi said as she gave Kagome the money that was needed.

 

                “Thanks mom.”  Kagome said.

 

                “What about the cookies?”  Zoey asked as she saw Kagome’s mother put a dozen in the over.

 

                “They’ll be here when you get back.”  Miss. Higurashi said.

 

                “Yay!”  Zoey said as she jumped up and down and then put the chair back into the other room that she was standing on.  She ran back in and jumped up and down next to Kagome, “When can we go?”

 

                “When ever we’re all ready.” Kagome said.

 

                Inu Yasha got up, “I’m ready.” 

 

                “Let’s go!”  Zoey said as she grabbed there hands and walked towards the door.

 

                “Bye Kagome.”  Her mother called after her.

                When they got to the fair, Kagome bought three bracelets and they all put them on.  Inu Yasha didn’t like it and tried to take it off.  Kagome told him he needed to wear it to get on the rides with them.  They first took Zoey to see some of the animals. Inu Yasha watched them as Zoey fed them some of the food she was given.

 

                They went on to the fairs wheel and both Zoey and Inu Yasha looked at the city of Tokyo. Kagome laughed at how enthused they were.

 

                After going on all of the rides, the three sat down and ate pizza.  Kagome had to show Inu Yasha how to eat it because this was one of the first times he had eaten it.

                On the walk home, Zoey was in Inu Yasha’s arms and had fallen asleep.  The two of them walked quietly away from the fair.  Inu Yasha’s ears twitched and he turned to see a group of girls walk towards them.

 

                “Kagome!” The yelled.

 

                Kagome turned around and was surprised to see them , “Eri, Yuka, Ayumi?  What are you doing here?”  Kagome asked in surprise.

 

                “We came to enjoy the fair and we all saw you walking away with him.” Eri said.

 

                “Kagome, is he the one you have been telling us about?”  Ayumi asked.

 

                Inu Yasha stared, ‘She talks about me to her friends?’

 

                Kagome nodded and the three of them backed up.

 

                ‘What has she been telling them?’  Inu Yasha asked himself.

 

                “Why didn’t you tell us you were feeling better?  We could’ve brought Hojo along.” Yuka said as she pulled Kagome away from Inu Yasha.

 

                “Hojo?”  Inu Yasha asked aloud and scared the four girls.

 

                Zoey began to more and rub her eyes.

 

                “He’s a boy from school.”  Kagome said quickly.

 

                “More like her boyfriend.  You should learn to treat Kagome better.”  Eri said.

 

                Inu Yasha blinked and smirked.  Kagome turned and glared at Eri, “He is not my boyfriend.”

 

                “Kagome...who’s that?”  Ayumi asked as she pointed to the child in Inu Yasha’s arms.

 

                Kagome turned and saw Zoey waking up, “Oh, that’s Zoey.”

 

                Zoey began to tug on Inu Yasha’s arm, “Daddy, can we go, I’m getting tired.”

 

                “In a minute squirt.” Inu Yasha said.

 

                “Kagome, you didn’t tell us her was a father.”  Eri said.

 

                “I didn’t think it mattered.” Kagome thought up quickly.

 

                “It does matter.”  Yuka said.

 

                “Mommy, I’m tired.”  Zoey said as she reached out her arms towards Kagome.

 

                “Mommy?”  The three of them said in unison.  “Kagome...you didn’t!”

 

                “No!”  Kagome said quickly.

 

                “You said that too quickly...”  Eri said.

 

                “I didn’t do anything!”  Kagome said.

 

                “Then why are you so defensive?”  Yuka asked.

 

                “I believe you Kagome.”  Ayumi said.

 

                Kagome smiled.

 

                “What would happen if Hojo heard about this?”  Eri and Yuka said in unison.

 

                “What does this have to do with Zoey?”  Kagome asked.

 

                “You’re seeing a guy who has a child Kagome.”  Eri said.

 

                “That’s really isn’t normal.”  Ayumi said.

 

                “I don’t want to talk about this anymore.”  Kagome said as she took Zoey into her arms and began to walk towards her shrine.

 

                “Kagome, we’re sorry.  Don’t go.”  The three of them called after her.

 

                Inu Yasha stared down at them and they looked up and stepped back a bit more, “Feh!”  Inu Yasha said as he turned to follow after Kagome.

                Kagome stopped walking when she got to the steps of her house.  Inu Yasha stood behind her and Zoey yawned.

 

                “Mommy, I’m tired.”  Zoey said.

 

                “Why don’t you go up to my room, I’ll be up there in a minute OK.”  Kagome said as she set Zoey down.

 

                “OK.”  Zoey said as she yawned once more and began to walk up the steps.

 

                Inu Yasha turned to Kagome and gave her a half smile.  She looked up at him, “What?”  She asked.

 

                “So, who’s this Hojo?  The way they were talking, he’s just not some guy from school.”  Inu Yasha teased.

 

                Is he actually teasing me?  Kagome smiled, “He’s just a guy who’s hung up over me and he doesn’t want to see that I don’t like him the way he likes me.”  Kagome blushed.  Did I just tell him all of that?  Oh no, he’s staring at me...

 

                “Are you sure?”  He was smiling.

 

                Kagome blinked then put her hand to his forehead.  Inu Yasha blinked then stared at Kagome, “Wha...what are you doing?”  Inu Yasha asked.

 

                “I’m checking to see if you have a fever?”  Kagome said smiling.

 

                “What?”  Inu Yasha said as he pushed her hand away.

 

                “You’ve never teased me like that before.” Kagome said still smiling.

 

                “Oh.  Well don’t get used to it, I was just in a good mood.”  Inu Yasha said as he squinted his eyes and walked up stairs. 

 

                Kagome smiled and walked after him

                The next morning, Kagome began to pack up her stuff.  She had a bag of cookies for Zoey to eat and to share with the others.  Zoey was playing a video game with Sota and was apparently beating him at it.  Inu Yasha was outside lying in the tree.

 

                Kagome smiled as she picked up Zoey and said her good-byes to her family.  The two of them walked outside to see Inu Yasha waiting for them at the shrine door.  He took Kagome’s pack and walked to the well and jumped it.

 

                Both Kagome and Zoey followed shortly after that.

 

                When they got onto the other side, they heard Sango and Miroku talking.

 

                “When are they going to get back?”  Sango asked.

 

                “I don’t know but this is serious.  We need them to hurry, we are powerless on our own.”  Miroku said.

 

                “Powerless?”  Sango said a bit coldly.

 

                “Yes, I hate to admit it but we don’t stand a chance.  We need Inu Yasha’s strength.

 

                Inu Yasha wrapped his arms around Kagome and Zoey and jumped up, surprising both Sango and Miroku.

 

                “What’s wrong?”  Kagome asked.

 

                “Kagome, Inu Yasha, you’re back.” They both said.

 

                Zoey looked around and stepped onto the ground, “Where’s Shippo?” 

 

                Usually Shippo was one of the first to say hello to Kagome when she returned from her time but he wasn’t in site.

 

                Kagome and Inu Yasha both looked around and could not find him.  Inu Yasha’s ears laid back onto his head and he growled.  “What’s wrong Inu Yasha?”  Kagome asked.

 

                “Sesshoamru, I can smell him all over this place.”  Inu Yasha growled.

 

                “Yes, Shippo’s been taken by Sesshoamru.”  Sango said.
