Chapter 6

 

A Midnight Adventure

 

                They all went inside and Zoey ran up to Kagome’s mom.  “Hello Grandma.”  She said as she gave her a big hug.

 

                “Hello dear.”  She said.

 

                Kagome stood staring at her then Zoey ran outside.  “Mom?”  She asked.

 

                “Kagome dear, why did your little friend call me grandma?”  She asked.

 

                Kagome sighed and told her family the whole story.

 

                “Oh, so she thinks I’m her Uncle?”  Sota asked.

 

                “Ya, so can you guys just play along for a little while?” Kagome asked.

 

                “Sure dear.”  Miss Higurashi said.

                Everyone sat down to eat supper that night.  Kagome sat by her mom and on the other side of her was her little brother Sota.  Next to Sota was Grandpa and next to him was Inu Yasha.  Between Inu Yasha and Kagome’s mother sat Zoey who was eating politely.  Everyone watched Inu Yasha as he ate.  He ate with his mouth open and slurped his food.  Kagome sighed as Zoey nudged him.  “Daddy, you’re being rude.  Eat with your mouth shut and don’t slurp.” Zoey said.

 

                Kagome laughed and Inu Yasha growled but listened anyway.

                That night, Kagome was putting Zoey to bed as Inu Yasha sat downstairs with the others.  Grandpa didn’t like that Inu Yasha was in the house and was holding several papers with incantations on them.  Kagome had yelled at him earlier for saying that he was going to use his spell scrolls to get rid of Zoey but Inu Yasha said to tell Zoey it was just a game if he tried to anyway.

 

                Up stairs Zoey fussed because she didn’t want to go to bed.  “Mommy, I don’t want to go to bed!  I want to stay up with you!”  She said as she tried to run for the door.

 

                “Zoey, behave, Inu Yasha!  Come help me!” She yelled.

 

                He came up and stood in the doorway.  “What is it?”  He asked.

 

                “Help me put Zoey to bed.” Kagome said.

 

                “I don’t want to go to bed!”  Zoey yelled.

 

                “Zoey be a good girl please?”  Kagome asked.

 

                She puffed up her cheeks and glared, “No!”  Zoey said.

 

                “Listen squirt, you listen to Kagome.”  Inu Yasha said.

 

                “No!” Zoey said again.

 

                Inu Yasha walked forward and slapped her on the mouth.  “Learn to behave.”  Inu Yasha said angrily.

 

                Zoey held her mouth and began to cry. Kagome turned to him and yelled, “Why’d you hit her!”

 

                “Because she wasn’t listening  and she was talking back.  She had to learn to listen.” Inu Yasha said.

 

                “We could have made her listen another way!” Kagome said as she stood up and pushed Inu Yasha out of her room.

 

                Inu Yasha walked back downstairs and out the front door muttering curse words towards Kagome.

 

                Kagome sat next to Zoey and pulled her into her lap.  “Shh, it’s OK.”  Kagome said as she tried to calm Zoey down.  Kagome looked down when she heard her stop crying.  She had fallen asleep.  Kagome put her in her bed and turned off the light. She closed the door and walked downstairs to find Inu Yasha.

                When Kagome’s footsteps had gone, Zoey opened her eyes and rubbed them.  She turned to the window and ran over towards it.  She looked for any signs of her father and jumped onto the windowsill.  She was about to climb out when a small voice was heard from her shoulder.

 

                “You know that Lord Inu Yasha will not approve of this.”  Myoga said as he bounced onto her shoulder.

 

                Zoey smiled and glanced around again.  She smiled and spoke in a whisper, “I didn’t know you came?”

 

                Myoga nodded, “You shouldn’t be going out.  You will make Lord Inu Yasha and Lady Kagome worried.”

 

                “So what!  They were mean.  Daddy hit me.  I want to go see the pretty lights.”  Zoey said as she jumped down and dashed towards the city.

                Kagome walked out to the front of her house and looked around.  She found Inu Yasha sitting on top of the well house.  She walked towards him and he turned his head away.   Kagome frowned and sat at the door of the shrine.  “Inu Yasha, could you come down here for a moment?” 

 

                Inu Yasha jumped down and stood in front of Kagome. “What do you want?” He asked coldly.

 

                “Inu Yasha...”  She began.

 

                “If this is about me hitting Zoey I’m sorry.  The way I see it, she had to learn that way.”  He said.

 

                Kagome sat quietly for a second, “Inu Yasha, I was never hit as a child and I didn’t want Zoey to be either.  She’s like my own child...”

 

                “But she’s not.  She was never your child to begin with.  Do you keep forgetting that?” Inu Yasha asked.

 

                “I can’t help it, she’s so convincing.  You wouldn’t understand.”  She said.

 

                “Try me.”  Inu Yasha said.

 

                “Well, I just can feel that she’s my own.  I’m not sure how to explain it.”  Kagome said.

 

                Inu Yasha sat down next to her and pulled her into a hug.  Kagome blushed as she looked up at him, “Inu Yasha?”

 

                “Kagome, Zoey is a part of you, but only because of a demon.”  Inu Yasha said.

 

                Kagome closed her eyes and took in what he said and something appeared in her inner eye.

                Kagome stood alone on the forest floor.  The sound of a young child was heard laughing.  Kagome stepped forward and found her self walking down a path.  She looked up into a tree and seen Inu Yasha smiling down at her. He raised his hand and pointed down the path she was walking down.  She stepped forwards and walked to a clearing with a shallow lake. ‘What is this?  I think I’ve been here before?’

 

                Kagome looked up to see the same little girl dressed in white. She gasped, “Zoey?”  She began as Zoey ran towards her.  From behind Zoey was a young boy holding a flute playing a soft tune.  Around him was a yellowish glow.  Kagome stepped back as she looked down at the child as she disappeared before her eyes, “ZOEY!”  Kagome yelled.

 

* * ~ * *

 

                “Kagome...Kagome?” Her mother said.

 

                Kagome woke up and focused on the blurred objects.  She saw her brother, Grandpa, mother and Inu Yasha standing around her.  She tried to sit up, “What happened?”  She asked.

 

                “You fainted.”  Inu Yasha said, “You were talking too, just before you woke up you shouted Zoey’s name.”

 

                “Zoey?”  Kagome shot up and nearly knocked them all over.  She ran up to the house and up to her room.  They all heard her slam her door open.

 

                Inu Yasha ran up after her to see her crying.  “What’s wrong Kagome?” He asked.

 

                “My dream...Zoey!”  Kagome cried as she pointed to the empty bed.

 

                Inu Yasha walked over towards the window and found her scent all over the window and lingering outside the windowsill too.  He jumped onto the window and turned to Kagome, “I’ll be back with Zoey, don’t worry.”

 

                Kagome looked up to see Inu Yasha jump out into the night.

                Zoey jumped from building top to building top.  Myoga held onto her shoulder as he looked around at the surrounding.  She came to a sudden stop and jumped to the road.  Cars honked and Zoey clapped.  Myoga watched as the screaming monsters with bright eyes flew by, “Why don’t these demons attack?  Let’s get out of here little Zoey.”  He asked.

 

                Zoey shook her head and smiled.  People on the street screamed and pointed to her. A truck was trying to stop when she turned around and jumped.  She landed on the window and it cracked as she jumped up onto the cab.  She jumped to a passing vehicle and road on it.  Behind her were more screams and a wreck.  Myoga sat quietly with his eyes bulging.  He looked up to the smiling Zoey as she lept off the car and ran towards a small park. She jumped onto a swing and played.

 

                She was laughing and didn’t noticed the footsteps behind her.  She heard a noise and looked ot see Inu Yasha standing.  She jumped off of the swing and began to run away from him.  He caught up to her and picked her up by the collar of her kimono top.  He turned her around to see her crying, “What’s wrong?”  Inu Yasha asked.

               

                “You hit me, and now you’re going to go it again.”  Zoey cried.

 

                “Listen squirt, I ain’t going to hit you.  Why did you leave the house and make Kagome worry?”  He asked.

 

                Myoga..” She began.

 

                Myoga?  you mean he’s here?”  Inu Yasha asked.

 

                “I M’Lord.  I could not resist.  I had to come and witness Lady Kagome’s time.”  Myoga said.

 

                Zoey looked towards Myoga and smiled evilly, “Daddy, he made me leave, I didn’t want to leave home.”  She began to cry again.

 

                “M’Lord, that isn’t the truth. I..I tried to stop her..” Myoga said as he was squashed between Inu Yasha’s fingers.

 

                “Come on squirt, let’s go home.”  Zoey nodded and leaned on his chest.

                Kagome sat on her steps as she waited for Inu Yasha to come back.  She kept thinking about her dream and she tried to remember some of the pieces.  All that she could remember was the sound of a flute, and Zoey disappearing.  She looked up to see Inu Yasha carrying Zoey in his arms.  Kagome smiled and ran down the steps to see Zoey sleeping in his arms with her thumb in her mouth.  Inu Yasha stopped and smiled up at her.  “She’s OK.”

 

                Kagome nodded, “I’m glad she’s all right.”

 

                Inu Yasha began to walk up the steps as Kagome stopped him and took Zoey’s thumb out of her mouth.  “There.”  She said.

 

                Inu Yasha halved smiled and walked up the steps.
