D-Days Food Stand Nets About $2,500

Lions Hines, JM and Householder reported that over the 3-day Darlington Days event we grossed nearly $5,000. Record attendance resulted in our normal potato usage increasing from 100 pounds to over 1900 pounds. Lack of help in the Food Stand was a big issue. Customer lines were huge. We could use another 20 Lions working the Food Stand on that weekend.  (One idea proposed was the use of ticket booths where customers could buy various “food tickets” for use at the Food Stand. This would avoid “change-making” delays at the Food Stand windows.)

Lackner Memorial Draws 2,000 People

Lion Ferguson said that the Lackner Memorial went off very well. About 100 people were at our Tailgate Party. He estimated attendance at the game as 2,000. Gross sales (game gate + tailgate party) were $3,600. After expenses, net profit was $2,200.

Darlington Days—Huge Success!

Lion Ferguson reported that the weather cooperated well and people flocked to the various events. Next year will be the 10^th Annual Darlington Days, so if you have any novel ideas for this celebration, please give them to Lion Gishbaugher ([email protected]; 724.651.3900) or Lion ([email protected]; 724.622.5342)

Northwestern Staff “Dunks” $230
As part of the Darlington Days events, some of the Northwestern staff helped on Saturday with the Chippewa Lions Dunk Tank. During their five hours, balls were thrown at the phenomenal rate of one every 40 seconds. Barb Brown, Dawn Kinger, Dora Powers, Jacquelynn Sturgeon, JaneAnn Fucci, Jodi Borroni, Karla Campagna, Michelle Rekrut and Shawn Haddox chased thrown balls through the mud and wiped them clean. Megan Anderson,

Laurel Beachem, Tom Nulph and Lori Uslenghi were “beloved targets” for the record Darlington Days crowd.  They helped raise $460 that day. Their share of those profits was $230. They promptly donate these profits to us, as a way of saying thanks for all that we do for them. (Thank you!  We’ll use your donation to help the less fortunate.)

Another Successful Horse Show!

Our annual Horse Show took place on Saturday, 21 June, at the Horse Rink at Brady’s Run Park. It was a very successful horse show with 318 entries.

Horse Show Food Stand Sells $800

Lion Gishbaugher reported that while the attendance at our Horse Show was down, “They ate a lot!” Sales were about $800 with profits being around $400.

Highway Cleanup “Grosses” 20 Bags

Lion Householder reported that our Spring Highway Cleanup on Saturday, 24 May, resulted in the pickup of 20 bags of trash plus assorted bigger items. The pickup crew consisted of eight people: Householder, T, Hinds, Stitt, McClain, Irwin, Mulig, B. Carter and Weister. They cleaned Rt. 51 from Rt. 168 to Chippewa and Rt. 168 from Rt. 51 to the Mobil Vet building. Lion Keith related that “...the weather was beautiful—Lions who didn’t participate missed a good time!”

Rose Sale Profit To Date: $11,370

Lion Laughner reported that the Little Beaver Lions sold 569 dozen, other Lions clubs sold 2149, 12 dozen were sent to nursing home for a total of 2720 dozen. (All clubs have paid for their roses. About $220 money is still outstanding from Little Beaver, so please pay if you have not settled up.) Total rose cost was $15,127; total money collected to date is $26,497; profit is $11,370. 

Total man-hours for the rose preparation--426 hours (Lions—315 hours; Lioness— 111 hours [26% of total]. We  paid the Lioness $1,000 for their help in stripping, dethorning and packaging the roses.)

Lion Bill thanks all those Lions and Lioness who helped make our 2008 Mothers Day Rose Sale a success. And, congratulations to Lion Bill for so skillfully directing our efforts!

Spring Wine Dinner Nets $730!

King Lion TEC reported that 56 people attended the Spring Wine Dinner which generated $730 profit. He thanked all who supported this event.

Family Picnic: 24 July

Our annual Lions/Lioness Family Picnic will be at our 24 July meeting (6:30 pm) at the Polo Field. The beverage, meat and rolls will be provided. Please bring one or two covered dishes (...and your table service). There will be games and prizes!

Steak Fry Meeting: 14 August

Get your appetite ready! Lion Ferguson announced that our annual steak fry meeting will be Thursday, 14 August, at the Lions Pavilion at the Polo Field. Cost will be $14. If you are looking for a tasty reason to attend one of our meetings,

Action Plans: Signup, Check List and Debrief Fundraisers

Lion Rooney stressed again the need for task assignment well in advance of an event. He also

suggested that a detailed “To Do” list be prepared for an event so that volunteers know what is expected. He further suggested that an event committee hold a “Debrief” to capture what went well and what items need improvement. Perhaps a booklet could be used during the event to collect these ideas. These should be made standard practice for the Rose Sale, Darlington Days, Horse Show, Food Stand, White Cane and Golf Outing. Good ideas! (Note: M. Carter will provide binders for each of these committees that will include available Procedures Manual notes.)

Blackhawk-Northwestern Thanks Lions Reading Mentors

Eleven of our 15 reading mentors were honored on 4 June at a special brunch hosted by Dr. Paul Kasunich, Blackhawk School District Superintendent, and JaneAnn Fucci, Northwestern Principal. “Thank you all for what you do. It’s critical to have community involvement in our schools. We appreciate what the Little Beaver Lions and Lioness are doing for the Northwestern Primary School. It’s rare in this day and age to have so many volunteers from a single organization such as years. Again, thanks and we look forward to growing our relationship” said Dr. Kasunich. Jane Ann Fucci stated “We do appreciate the time* and effort you have given to our students. It’s people like you that make a difference, not so much for us staff, but for our children. These children knew when it was their day to read with you and they looked forward to their time with you. You truly made a difference in their lives.  Working with them to regularly read books did much to help develop their reading skills.”

In addition to a delicious bunch, the reading mentors were presented with a Northwestern coffee cup and cards signed by the children who were mentored. A special highlight of the morning was a medley of songs presented by about 50-60 students led by teacher Nancy Klimchak. (These students gave up recess-time to prepare and to sing for us!)

Lion Freed “Survives”  5K Run

Lion Harry Freed, a 78-year old, is a survivor. About 14 years ago he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. After an operation and radiation treatments, Lion Harry survived cancer and went about his life.  On 31 May he survived yet another big event. He not only ran in the 3^rd

Annual Darlington Days Derby 5K (...that’s 3.1 miles) but also he finished the race, winning 1^st place in the over 70 group.

Jodi Laderer, American Cancer Society Relay For Life Team Flip Flop Captain, related that “Harry is the oldest participant to run our 5K. We are very thankful to have Harry Freed as a cancer survivor, as an active supporter of our team and as a participant in the 5K .” For Harry’s involvement with their organization, Jodi Laderer presented him with card and gift certificate to Bert’s. “I only ran this 5K on a whim!” responded Lion Harry.

Lion Harry has been a member for 45 years of the Little Beaver Lions Club in Darlington. To honor his 5K achievement, we presented him a plaque and offered to arrange some 70+ year jogging partners.

Nita Freed Relates Corneal Transplant Experience

Nita Freed, wife of Life Lion Harry, shared with us her experience with her corneal transplants. Years ago these operations used to be followed by the patient enduring months of recovery with a sand bagged head, covered eyes and strict orders not to bend over. What a difference technology has made. Nita’s operation at UPMC took 2 ½ hours...and she was able to go home the same day! Nita reports that all is going well and she no longer needs to wear her thick glasses. Congratulations Nita! (Note: Little Beaver Lions donations helped build the eye center.)

We congratulate Lion Keith on a fine job organizing this year’s visitations—17 visitations over a 12-month period. Aside from meeting other Lions,

those visitations gathered us 5,100 points toward the District Governor’s Contest ( 9 % of our 59,250 point total for the Lions year). Well done!
