Anthony Caratelli Honored as February  High School Student of the Month

We honored Anthony Caratelli as our February Student of the Month.    Anthony is the son of Lesa and Art Caratelli and the brother of Alex.

Anthony is a senior at Blackhawk High School where he is a member of the Computer Club and the Spanish Club.  He participates in computer competitions at Blackhawk and at Westminster University. 

For hobbies, he fixes and modifies computers, plays video games, sets up computers and computer networks for relatives and friends.  His community service activities include tutoring students to set up and fix computers.

He carries a 3.9 grade point average.

After graduation from Blackhawk High School he will attend Westminster University majoring in Computer Science to become a computer and software programmer.  (Anthony is a recipient of a $17,000/year academic scholarship.)

Fishing Derby Scheduled—2 May

Lion M. Seiber reported that our Annual Fishing Derby is scheduled for Saturday, 2 May.                        

Night-At-The-Races—7 March

Lion Nelson reported that our Night-At-Races is scheduled for Saturday, 7 March, at the South Beaver Fire Hall.  (This will be a joint sponsorship with the South Beaver Fire Department.) Doors open at 6 pm; races begin at 7 pm.  Tickets: couple (with a horse)--$20, couple (without a horse)--$12, single (with a horse)--$15, single (without a horse)--$8, Business Race Sponsor--$50.   For tickets contact Lion Nelson 724-513-5338 or 724-847-3840.

Northwestern Classroom of the Month.

The Northwestern Primary School selected Room 206 as the February “Classroom of the Month.”  Guidance Counselor Bob Abel said that the students of Room (Mrs. Uslenghi) were selected because of their exemplary behavior, outstanding attitude and excellent performance.  The class was presented with a plaque and the “Class of the Month” banner was posted above their classroom door.  Congratulations Room 206!

Membership “Information Meeting” ID’s Six Potential Members

On 24 February we held an “Information Meeting” at Lance’s for five prospective members.   We spoke on six of our service projects: the Northwestern “Adoption” (Reading mentoring, vision screening, Classroom of the Month, Grandparents Day), the Fishing Derby, the Christmas Food Baskets, the Beacon Lodge Work Weekend, The Lighthouse and the Blood Drive. 

JaneAnn Fucci, Principal, Northwestern Primary School and Pat Miller, American Red Cross, provided feedback on the impact of our community service projects. 

Six people showed interest in joining and are invited to our 19 March “Friendship Night.”  That would be a 10% increase in members.  Two prospects are in their thirties.  Two others are women. 

About 15 other prospects were unable to attend our Information Meeting but we will send them the meeting information and invite them to our Friendship Night.

Northwestern Principal Praises “Adoption”

(Note: We share with you the comments JaneAnn Fucci, Northwestern Primary School Principal, made during our Information Meeting.)

“When the Little Beaver Lions first offered your help, we were a little questionable—would you actually deliver on what you offered?  How long would your commitment last?  Fortunately for the Northwestern Primary School you have delivered what you offered.  What a beneficial program your ‘Adoption’ has been.  What dedicated people the Lions have proven to be.  You have followed up on every promise that you made.  We started working together in 2006 and it is now 2009.  The ‘Adoption’ keeps getting better and better. 

“Our kids have gotten used to you ladies and gentlemen coming to our classrooms.  The process is seamless.  The ’Lion Listeners’ (as we affectionately call them) come to the Office, sign in, pick up their tags and go to their assigned classroom.  There, the children are ready and waiting: ‘It’s my turn to read!’ These are the children who may not have anyone to read with them at home.  Therefore, the child needs someone to read that book with them.  It is so valuable to have a Lion Listener to fill that need—to listen to the student read and to help them overcome their reading difficulties in a nonjudgmental way.  This help is critical for the child to be successful.  The teacher would like to spend more time with each child but there is just not enough time.  The Lion Listener is one more person who is special to the child.  They make a difference in that student’s life.  That’s what school is about—making a difference in children’s lives.  And that’s what Lions Listeners have done and are doing.  So, I formally thank the Lions Listeners for making a difference in these children’s lives.

“The monetary support that you give us for Christmas expenses and other help for needy children is most helpful.  Here s one example of how we use the money you have provided us: Just recently we had a child come to school with pants so small that she could not close them.  We bought her two or three new sets of clothing that fit.  (We sent a note home to the parents asking if they needed financial help.)  To be able to buy clothing for needy children, to know that we have your grants as resources, to not have to go through the ‘red tape’ of Assisted Social Services system gives us the freedom to immediately help a child in need.  (At the same time we also contact Social Services so there is a long term fix.)     But, to know ‘right now’ that the child has some clothes to wear makes a real difference to the child and how they feel about themselves.  The Little Beaver Lions Club is the ‘Gap Filler’ for many of these families with such needs.  Your donations are what are helping these people. 

“On what might seem to be a smaller scale, Grandparents Day is an important event for our students.  It is a day when the children show of what they are doing in school to their grandparents.  If

you want to see 5-year olds or 6-year olds who are ‘devastated,’ look to children who have no one to show around while all of their classmates have someone. However, when they know that someone ‘special’ will be there for them to take on the tour, it makes a difference.   

“So, when you put those nine service projects into a package, you have built a very meaningful ‘Adoption.’  When you offered to ‘adopt’ our school three years ago, I thought ‘OK...let us see how long it lasts.’  But the ‘Adoption’ has lasted and it has made a big difference in the lives of our children.  Thank you!”

Board Approves “Participation Pledge”

The Board of Directors approved the following Little Beaver Lions Participation Pledge:

As a Little Beaver Lion I will:

r       Commit time to help the less fortunate, as my schedule permits

r       Pay my dues (If I have difficulties, I will contact the Club Secretary.)

r   Help with service projects and fundraisers*

r   Try to attend meetings*

*If a conflict of time exists between helping with a service project or fundraiser and attending a meeting, skip the meeting.

“The days of the ‘Dinner Club’ are going to have to change.  If we don’t, we are in trouble.  We need to bring people into our clubs who don’t have time for dinner meetings but do have time to serve.  They are very busy people but they are looking for ways to give back to their community.  We must ‘give them some room’ to do that.  We must be flexible with our meeting attendance requirements.  It is more important to have a Lion help with a project than to eat dinner with us.  We must recruit for people who will help, not for dinner guests.”

The Pledge will be part of our Indoctrination Ceremony and is intended to reinforce our priority of participating in service projects and fundraisers over dinner meeting attendance.

Lion Buska Awarded Progressive Melvin Jones Fellowship

PCC McCarl reported that Lion Gabe Buska, now in the Armed Services, has been awarded a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellowship.  Congratulations Lion Gabe!

Road Clean-Up Scheduled for 28 March

Lion Householder reported that the Spring Highway Clean-Up is scheduled for Saturday, 28 March.  We need eight to ten Lions to volunteer for this two-hour task. (Meet at the crossroad of Routes 168 & 51 by 9 am.)

Darlington Days: Special Food Stand Committee Needed

Lion Ferguson reported that preparations for Darlington Days are underway.  Lion O’Neill will manage entertainment events.

Lion Gishbaugher requested that a special committee be formed to organize the Food Stand for the three days of Darlington Days.  If food service to the crowds of customers could be improved, a significant increase in profit could be realized.  Some ideas suggested were a simplified menu of hamburgers and hotdogs, a ticket booth for the selling of food tickets to avoid congestion at the food counter, someone to assemble and manage adequate inventories, the blanching of large amounts of fries, two grills.  Lions Gishbaugher, Ferguson, Laughner and O’Neill already have other Darlington Day responsibilities.  Other Lions are needed to fill the duties of a Darlington Day Food Stand Committee.  (This need will be discussed at the 12 March Meeting.)     

Non-PAHA Horse Show Approved

Lion Laughner reported that the Immediate Past President of the PA Amateur Horse Association, Jim Farrior, and  the Immediate Past PAHA Secretary, Joe Copy, have agreed to help us hold a non-PAHA, no-points horse show. (Note: Due to economic reasons, the PAHA cancelled our horse show.)  There would not be as many classes.  The first half of the show would be “games” (barrel races and timed events).  The second half of the day would consist of “pleasure” events. 

(Note: The Board approved holding a non-PAHA Horse Show on Saturday, 11 July, at the Brady’s Run Ring.)

Lion Listeners Conduct 317 Sessions

Lion M. Carter reported that in the months of January and February Lion Listeners conducted 317 15-mimute mentoring sessions.

Have You Paid Your Dues?

We are very proud to be able to say “100 % of the money we collect from the public goes back into helping the less fortunate. Not one penny goes to pay for the administration of our Club!”  We can say these statements only because you pay your dues. 

Our annual dues are $70 per member.  Here is a breakdown of where these dues go:

Ÿ         International - $39

Ÿ         State - $11

Ÿ         District - $2.50

Ÿ         Club - $17.50

 

That means we have about $900 from the $17.50 club dues each year to administratively run our Club.  Out of those administrative funds come expenses for our newsletter (ink cartridges, copier toner, paper and postage), flowers, postage, office supplies and other administrative costs.

As of 1 March, 43 Lions (77% of our members) have paid their dues.  (Thank you very much!)  Three (5%) have to pay their 2^nd-half year dues.  (Don’t forget!)  However, 10 Lions (18%) have yet to pay anything.  Not only are we missing the $17.50 Club portion, but also we are missing the $52.50 portion we use to pay our International, State and District dues obligations.  For 10 members that is over $520!  Please help us out by paying your dues today.  (If you are experiencing financial difficulties, please contact Lion Mark Carter for alternate arrangements on a case-by-case basis.  Don’t just let your membership lapse!)

Beaver County Association of the Blind “Fleet” Need Discussion

During a discussion of the potential need of the Beaver County Association of the Blind’s for a replacement van, two points were made:

Ÿ   Due to the high mileage usage of the van, avoid used vehicles

Ÿ   Apply for an LCIF grant to match funds raised by the Association.

Four Attend Third Cabinet Meeting

PCC Brian McCarl and Lions Laughner, B. Carter and M. Carter attended the 3^rd Cabinet Meeting at the Butler Blind Association on 14 February.

Fourth Cabinet Meeting—21 March

The 4^th Cabinet Meeting is Saturday, 21 March at the Butler Blind Association (322 North McKean St, Butler) from 1:30-3:30 pm. 

Spring Convention—3 April

The Spring Convention is Friday, 3 April, at The Atrium in Prospect (Rte. 422 near Butler). Necrology Service begins at 6:30 pm and a buffet-style dinner at 7 pm. Cost is $20/person.  Reservations must be made by Wednesday, 25 March.  We must pay in advance, so please give your check (payable to “District 14-N”) to Lion Mark Carter. 

Water Conservation (Fish and Boat Commission) Program—26 March

Lion Wakelee reported that Lion Nelson has arranged for Emmett Kower, Waterway Conservation Officer for the Southwest Region of the PA Fish and Boat Commission, to present a program at our 26 March Meeting.
