WE SERVE: “We are what we do!”
During our Fall Rally International Director Larry Johnson offered some good observations about recruiting new members.
“The three most frequent questions about becoming a member are:
? How much does it cost?
? How much time does it take?
? What do you do?
“Get that last question right and prospective members won’t care about the other two answers.
? Do we sell light bulbs or are we buying glasses for needy people?
? Do we sell pancakes or are we building ball fields for our community?
? Do we sell raffle tickets or are we teaching blind kids to ski?
“Think about why someone would want to be a Lion. Don’t tell them what you sell--tell them what you do.
Invite them to help you with your service projects before you invite them to be a member. Let them meet your
members while they are out there making a difference. Once they have experienced your service work, then ask
them to become a member. Once they understand why you are fundraising, maybe they will be more interested
in helping. Since CSF began in the early ‘90’s, we have prevented severe vision loss or restored sight in 27 million
people. That’s more than the combined populations of Tokyo and New York. We’ve provided over 142 million
treatments for River Blindness. By 2010 River Blindness should be eliminated from Latin America. Surgery funded
by Lions has restored sight for 7.3 million people with cataracts.
“That’s what Lions do--not what they sell.”
So what do “WE” do? What is the Little Beaver Lions Club doing?
Let’s look at our service projects, our DOING,“...in no particular order..:”

Now, add in fundraisers (Rose Sale, Horse Show, Golf Tournament, Spring Wine Dinner, Night-At-The-Races, White
Cane Safety Days, Refreshment Stand, Brooms) and we are a VERY busy club.
But we still find the time to serve our community by volunteering for nineteen service projects. If you’ve volunteered
for any of these service projects--THANKS! If you have not, why not start helping in 2009?
“WE SERVE” is more than our motto. It’s what we do.

Audrey Riddle Honored as November Blackhawk High School Student of the Month We honored Audrey Riddle as our November Student of the Month. Audrey is the daughter of Bob and Deb Riddle and the sister of Skylar Riddle.
Audrey is a senior at Blackhawk High School where she is Vice President of the National Honor Society, Editor of the school newspaper-The Beat, and a member of the Student Council, Sports Journalism Club, English Club and the Fellowship of Christian Students.
For hobbies she enjoys throwing on the potter’s-wheel, singing and playing the guitar, reading and babysitting. Her community service includes various service projects as a member of the National Honor Society and the Student Council, as well as serving as a mentor for the Blackhawk Intermediate School’s Dare2XL, an after school program for at-risk students. She is a member of the Chippewa Evangelical Free Church where she is director of the Children’s Christmas Musical. She has been a Student Leader in her church for four years, a member of the Youth Worship Band for five years, and a Vacation Bible School volunteer for four years. She plans a mission trip to Kenya, Africa in the winter of 2009.

She carries a 4.1 grade point average.
After graduation from Blackhawk High School she will attend a four-year university, majoring in Children’s or Youth Ministries.
Northwestern Classroom of the Month. The Northwestern Primary School selected Room 205 as the November “Classroom of the Month.” Guidance Counselor Bob Abel said that the students of Room 205 were selected because of their exemplary behavior, outstanding attitude and excellent performance. The class was presented with a plaque and the “Class of the Month” banner is posted above their classroom door. Congratulations Room 205!
13 January Blood Drive Target: 45 Units Pat Miller, Senior Field Representative of the American Red Cross (Donor Resources Department), challenged us to collect 45 units of blood during our upcoming blood drive on 13 January 2009..
“Why do we have blood shortages? The Red Cross doesn’t ‘need’ any blood. However, YOU do need blood! A blood drive belongs to you, your families, your friends and your neighbors. Each of you knows at least 100 people. Of these 100 people, 35 could give blood. But, only five do. Of these 100 people whom you know, 97 will need blood. Think |

about these numbers. If only five people who you know gave blood and 97 needed blood, how would you decide who got the blood? We are constantly faced with that situation.
“Medical treatment can be compromised because of a lack of enough blood. The American Red Cross needs an inventory of a five-day supply of blood-on-hand to satisfy needs. We are at about a 3-day supply right now—the best it looks for five months. But we are still below our five-day minimum.
Why are we below our five-day target? First, we have increased usage of blood. Medical procedures are requiring more blood products. Second, we have a decreased population of potential donors. It used to be that 60% of the population could give blood. Now, only 35% can give blood. That is because of medical conditions, travel and life style choices. So, our pool of potential donors has shrunk significantly. In Beaver County 20 years ago, we used to collect 12,000 units of blood each year. We now collect 6,000 units. However, we supply about 16,000 units of blood products (red cells, platelets, plasma, cryo-participates) primarily to the Medical Center. So the need has gone up but the donor pool has gone down.
All of you know that collecting blood is a good thing—that hospitals should get blood. What is hard is how to convince people to donate. We have many people who are very happy to “sponsor” blood drives—open up the doors and conduct a “Hope to God” blood drive (“Hope to God that donors show up!”). What really brings the donors in to a blood drive? You! People don’t come into our blood drives because of the cookies we serve. People don’t come in because of the posters we put up. Rather, people come in because we personally invited them. We’ve all seen engagement announcements in the newspapers. But, what kept us from going to the wedding? We were not invited!
To have a successful blood drive we need to invite people!”
In January we will be facing snow, flu, colds and sniffles. But people don’t stop having cancer because it’s snowing. Or quadruple bypasses. Or accidents. What you do to make your blood drive a successful one is a wonderful thing”. Our blood drive is Tuesday, 13 January 2009, from 2-7 pm at |

Little Beaver Christmas Party—12 Dec. Lion Hinds reported that our joint Christmas Party with the Lioness is scheduled for Friday, 12 December, at the Enon Valley Rod and Gun Club at a cost of $12/person. (Pay at the door.) Ham, turkey and desserts will be catered by Weavers. There will be a DJ for dancing, so “Come on down!” (...go in to Enon Valley...take Rt. 551 North out of Enon Valley...take the fork to the right toward Mount Jackson...cross the bridge...turn right on to Rod & Gun Drive...go ½ mile to the Rod & Gun Club) So, call Lion Hinds (724-336-5937) for reservations.
Christmas Food Baskets Update Lion Hostetler reported that we donated $51 during our October meetings and over $160 during our November meetings. In addition the Lioness have donated $70. Last year we distributed 62 food baskets at a cost of over $1,500. A total of 12 Lions have volunteered to prepare the food baskets at the Darlington UP Church on Friday, 19 December. Nine Lions will distribute those baskets at the church on Saturday, 20 December, from 10:00 to 11:30 am.
Membership “Prospecting” Target—50 Our membership “Prospecting” target is 50 names. These would be men and women whom we would invite to a February meeting where we would discuss the service projects that we do. This meeting would be followed up with an invitation to a “Friendship Night” meeting in April where we would present the requirements and benefits of joining with us. But, the process begins with the identification of prospective members. Who among your friends would be good Lions—people who might not be able to attend all of our meetings but would help with our service projects and fundraisers? Please take a few minutes to think about this question and then list those people on the attached “Prospecting Form.” |

Can You Help?--Beacon Lodge “Needs List” Lion B. McCarl discussed the Beacon Lodge “Needs List” (attached). Any items that we can personally donate would be greatly appreciated. Such donations reduce what has to be taken from their general budget. Lighthouse Fundraiser Needs Support Lion Brian McCarl announced that the Lighthouse is sponsoring a “Penguins Raffle” of four box seats to a game, a Crosby jersey, hats, pillows, lighters and blankets. Tickets are $2 each or three for $5. Contact Lion Brian ([email protected]). He reminded us that the Lighthouse receives no federal or state monies--they rely solely on donations to fund their operations.
