(Club to Focus on Recruiting New Members...continued)

We would supply members and “recruiters” with recruiting brochures, the “Good with a Hammer” trifold, Club History and the Northwestern Primary School press release.     Could we talk to church congregations or pass out brochures after services by a Lion who is a member of the church? 

While some people may not be able to attend meetings regularly, they will participate in our events.    We want to recruit new members who are willing to volunteer to help with our service projects and fundraisers.

The importance of recruiting women was stressed.  The East Palestine Lions have recruited 21 women in the last two years.  We need to significantly increase our efforts in this area.

Heather Rohm Honored as October  High School Student of the Month

We honored Heather Rohm as our October Student of the Month.    Heather is the daughter of Mark Rohm and Lesli Staats of Enon Valley and the sister of Amanda Daquila, Leighanne Nusser and Lauren Csoman..

Heather is a senior at Blackhawk High School where she is Senior Class President. She is also editor of the school newspaper-The Beat, and a member of the Student Council, National Honor Society, Sports Journalism Club, English Club, Schools-for-Schools Club, Teen Voices (in affiliation with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette), and the  school play.  She also works at Café Kolache in Beaver.

For hobbies she enjoys anything outdoors (hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, rock climbing), reading, writing, softball (10 years!), and hanging out with friends.  Her community service includes various service projects as a member of the National Honor Society, as well as volunteering for the March of Dimes, Relay for Life, Allegheny Valley Schools (home for disabled individuals), Special Olympics, and Toys for Tots.

After graduation from Blackhawk High School she will attend a four-year university, majoring in English with a minor in Communications, and then obtain a graduate degree in Journalism.

Northwestern Primary Changes from “Student” to “Classroom of the Month”

The teachers, guidance counselor and principal have decided to change from a “Student of the Month” format to a “Classroom of the Month.” They felt it unfair to pick one student, since they have so many outstanding students in each classroom from whom to choose.  Starting in November they will select a classroom whose attributes and performance merits selection as the “Classroom of the Month.”  They will provide us with a written narrative of why this class was selected.  We will provide a plaque that will be presented to the classroom by the Guidance Counselor, Bob Abel.  During that month, there will be a 2’ x 1’ banner (“Classroom of the Month—Little Beaver Lions”) displayed over the outside doorway of the classroom.  

Lions Commmunity Bonfire is a Hit!

On Saturday, 18 October, we held our first Lions Community Bonfire.  Lion Irwin reported that over 50 people visited the bonfire and donated $151 for our Christmas Food Basket Service Project.  “The Bonfire was a first-time big success. Everyone who attended enjoyed the laid-back warmth of fire, friends and family.  We extend gratitude and thanks to Lions Cekovich, Nelson, Wilson, Stear, Sherman and M. Carter, and to Lioness Cekovich Young, Gallentine and Sherman.  Teamwork was definitely the key to a successful event! 

“We also extend our thanks to Bob ‘White Buffalo Heart’ Stinger for his Indian Folklore stories and relaxing music, to Paul McKean for the use of 20 straw bales, to Mrs. John Laughlin for her dessert and to Mr. and Mrs. David Landsberger for their help with the clean-up.  Our sincere ‘Thank You!’ to the Darlington Polo Club for granting us permission to hold our bonfire on their polo field.

“Plans are already in the works for next year’s Lions Community Bonfire.  So, for great fellowship, please plan on attending...and start gathering you pine firewood!”

Free Winter Coats for the Needy

Know a needy person who could use a winter coat?  The Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Chippewa has collected 230 coats and will be distributing them on Saturday, 8 November, from 9:30 am-3 pm at 2679 Darlington Road in Chippewa. They will also be serving free coffee and donuts for those who pick up coats.

The Mount Olive Lutheran Church asks for our help in advertising this event to needy individuals.

Should We Expand Our Rose Sale?

Lion TEC reminded us of the question “Should we expand our Rose Sale?”  “The Horse Show is a lot of work before, during and after” said Lions Gishbaugher and Rooney.  If we stop doing the Horse Show, we really have to get serious about the Rose Sale.  We would need to compensate for the net profit lost from the Horse Show.  We would have to expand our sales into Ohio and Allegheny County.  To do that we need to start organizing now.  At what price should we sell in ’09--$17/dozen? (Lion M. Carter will talk to Lion Laughner.)  Lion M. Carter has arranged to get a district directory for the Ohio Lions Clubs of interest and will obtain a copy of the Allegheny Lions Clubs (District 14-B).  Then we can send out interest letters to these clubs. 

Programs: American Red Cross to Speak at Our 13 November Meeting

At our 13 November meeting Pat Miller, Senior Field Representative, will speak with us about their donor activities.  (We are sponsoring a blood drive for the Red Cross on 13 January at the Darlington Municipal Building from 2-7 pm.)

Christmas Food Basket Donations Now Being Accepted

Lion Hostetler reported that we should bring canned goods or money to the meetings in November.  We donated $51 during our 9 October meeting.

Blackhawk Intermediate School Includes Lions Drug Awareness Posters As Class Project

Lion M. Carter reported that the Blackhawk Intermediate School (BIS) has agreed to include the Lions Drug Awareness Poster as a class project for all Fourth Grade students.  Also, we will supply a trifold brochure that will be sent by BIS to the parents, explaining the project.

We Will Meet With the Leo Club Officers

We need to improve communication and coordination with the Leo Club.  What service projects are they considering?  What types of service projects interests them?  What help do they need from us?  One idea is to invite the Leo Club officers to one of our meetings and ask them these questions.  Lion Laughner will contact the Leo Club Advisor, Joe Verbosky, on how best to answer these questions. 

Audit Committee Finds ’07-’08 Financial Records in Order

The Audit Committee reported that a review of our financial records for the period 1 July ’07 to 30 June ’08 found all records to be in order.
