“Lions Are Everyday Heroes!”
Twenty-three Lions and six Lioness from Little Beaver joined with 20 other Lion guests from the Chippewa,
New Brighton and Riverside Lions Clubs to visit with our District Governor, Anna Marie Larkin and to participate
in a Zone Meeting. Delicious ham (“Roast Pig”) and beef were prepared by Lion Nelson. The meal was completed
with rolls, coleslaw, tomatoes, potatoes and beverages thanks to Lions Ferguson, Hostetler and Householder.
Here are a few excerpts from the District Governor’s presentation ‘Lions are Everyday Heroes.’
“Some things we do are to us acts of kindness but really these acts are miracles to others.” That fact generates the
phrase ‘Miracles through Service.’ As far as service projects, there are two main areas: one is service projects that
help our community and the other is membership. These two areas are connected.
Service projects that we do—hands-on projects. Disaster relief is one example. Lions Clubs International Foundation
(LCIF) spends about $2 million each year for emergency grants and other disaster relief. With the information that we
can give the public (diabetes awareness), with things we do to improve health in our communities, with environmental
programs (road cleanup, planting trees and flowers), with Lions Quest (youth development and drug abuse prevention),
with programs to eradicate blindness, with eyeglass collections, MTI screening, eye hospitals and eye research, we really
do a lot of community service.”
“The second area, connected to community service, is membership. All of your clubs do much to help your communities.
Do not you wish that there were more of you, so you could do more? When we look at any of our service projects, we
see leadership by the committee chair and teamwork by the Lions who help with that particular project. New members
mean more help on these committees. We are investigating awards for those Lions who bring in new members.”
“I would like our membership to increase this fiscal year. What are you Club Goals for membership? I want to increase
the membership of women Lions and to form new clubs. What is your retention strategy to keep those Lions who feel that
they do not want to be a Lion anymore? To retain our members we have to keep them actively involved in Lionism. We
need interesting speakers at our meetings and challenging projects that we can all work on together.”
“I will be pushing Public Relations this year. We have to brag about ourselves. By November 15, every club should have a
brochure that they can give to the public. Then, at our Fall Rally, we can display all the various brochures as an information
exchange.”
“While we do a good job on our Drug Awareness Poster Contest, should we not be giving the children something to share
with their parents at home? Shouldn’t the parents know what we are doing and why we are sponsoring the contest?”
“Some Lions do more than the normal person does. They go out of their way to get things accomplished. I am going to work
on a contest to recognize these individuals. The criteria will be communicated in the District Newsletter.”
“Lions make a difference, every day. Our communities need our clubs.”

Blind Picnic Is A Big Success Lion Thayer reported that this year’s Blind Picnic at the Lighthouse was again very successful. About 45 clients were served and entertained by 16 Lions, 3 Lioness and five others (Susan Thayer, Judy Wakelee, Kristen Heistand—Lighthouse Director, Fred Isabella—Hopewell Lions, and Jeff Loudermilk—Ambridge Lions. A total of 40 hours were volunteered at a cost of $634.
Our picnic is well organized and well staffed. The visually impaired really appreciate our Blind Picnic. They love the meal and our game events. You could see the pleasure in the faces of the “clients” as they left that evening. Lion Thayer has organized this event for many years and the expertise of Ben and Sue Thayer is a valuable asset. And so are the efforts of the Lions and Lioness!
Christmas Food Basket Donations Now Being Accepted Lion Hostetler reported that we should bring canned goods or money to the meetings in October and November. |
Golf Outing Scores! Our annual Golf Outing was Saturday, 20 September, at the Beaver County Golf Club. Lions Ferguson and McCarl reported that the weather was wonderful for the 64 golfers who participated. Top prizes were 1st Place—Dinner for four at Olde Stonewall, 2nd Place—Foursome at Squaw Creek Golf Course, 3rd Place—Foursome at the Beaver Valley Golf Club. Event profits are estimated in the $4,000-$5,000 range. Special thanks were given to Lions Thayer, Wakelee, Householder, Rooney, Wilson and M. McCarl who helped with the event, those Lions who golfed and those Lions who sponsored holes. We had two corporate sponsors—L. B. Shearing...11 years in-a-row (Lion Bevivino) and Specialty Fabrication...3 years in-a-row (Lion Letzkus). And a very special “Thanks!” to “Cookie” Forsythe at Lance’s who got 17 hole sponsors ($850).
Food Stand/Pavilion Are Insured For those of you who wish to know if our food stand and pavilion are insured, we have total property coverage of $48,000: Ÿ $30,000—Food Stand building Ÿ $10,000—Building contents Ÿ $ 6,000—Pavilion Ÿ $ 2,000—Pavilion contents
Our deductible is $250.
Food Stand Profits Are Over $2,000 Lion Tom Hinds reported that the Food Stand made over $2,000 this year at the Polo Games. Many thanks to all who helped make the season so successful.

Wal-Mart Hinders White Cane Donations
Wal-Mart’s new solicitation restrictions significantly reduced the donations that we collected over two days (20-21 September). Last year we collected $3,107. This year we collected $1,344, a 57% reduction. Wal-Mart restricted us to only one side of each entrance (Food and Main), as opposed to both sides last year. Also, we were forced to move 15-feet from the entrances and then 30-feet. |
This positioning essentially denied us the ability to make contact with their customers. We were not aggressively soliciting. We were not rude. Those people we solicited (“Would you care to help us help the blind?) often thanked us for our efforts to aid the blind. However, Wal-Mart’s restrictions on our soliciting have created a “non-solicitation” environment.

Fall Highway Cleanup “Cleans Up!” Lion Householder reported that our Fall Highway Cleanup on Saturday, 27 September, was completed in 2.5 hours. In addition to our regular section of Rt. 51, Rt 168 to Mobile Vet. was also picked up. Volunteers were Lions Householder, B. Carter, Laughner, Cekovich, T. Hinds, Mulig, Sherman Nelson and Irwin and guest Tim Ferguson. Together they removed 16 bags of trash. Well done!

Why We Support the District Governor’s Special Projects At our meeting with the District Governor, we presented her with a check to support her special projects. Each year we donate a “small amount” ($20) for each member of our Club. For $1,140 we are able to help a number of important efforts.

The individual amounts seem small. But, when multiplied by the 44 club membership of District 14-N, the potential donations become rather significant. Why do we support these projects? Look again at the individual projects. Isn’t that a profile of why we joined Lions?
Please think of the significance of “small amounts” the next time you are trying to decide if you should sell a dozen roses... work an hour at the Food Stand... help for a hour on our Highway Cleanup... get a Patron Ad for the Horse Show Program...fill a “time-slot” for White Cane Safety Days....
“Small Amounts” add up!
Lions Community Bonfire—18 October Lion Melanie Irwin informs us that our Lions Community Bonfire is scheduled for Saturday evening, 18 October, at the Polo Field. Admission will be $3/person, with the profits going to our Christmas Food Baskets for the needy. Free hotdogs will be offered to the public.
