Lion Freed Awarded Melvin Jones Fellowship
During our Steak Fry Meeting on 14 August, Lion Harry Freed was awarded a Melvin
Jones Fellowship Award. The Melvin Jones Fellowship was created in 1973 and is named
in honor of the founder of Lions Clubs International, Melvin Jones. The fellowship was
established as LCIF’s highest form of recognition to acknowledge an individual’s dedication
to humanitarian service. When an individual, club or district donates $1,000 to LCIF for a
Melvin Jones Fellowship, an inscribed plaque and lapel pin are presented to the specified
individual.
In his presentation comments, PCC McCarl noted that “...this award is long overdue in recognizing
the contributions Lion Harry has made over the past decades. He has given a lot of time and effort
over the years to make the Little Beaver Lions the club it is today. He is an elder statesman of our
club. He is one of two Lions who have served two terms as our King Lion.” (Note: PCC McCarl was
the other Lion.) “He came up ‘through the chairs’ twice, serving as 1st, 2nd and 3rd VPs. He’s chaired
over 15 committees for our club. Most importantly, he was Treasurer for this club for nine years.
He not only supports Campaign SightFirst II, but also he was a key supporter of Campaign SightFirst I
in 1995. It is our pleasure to present Lion Harry Freed with this overdue recognition.”
Congratulations Lion Harry and thank you for your valuable contributions of time and effort!

Little Beaver Steak Fry Hosts 59 People If you did not attend the Steak Fry, you missed a great meeting! Fifty-nine Lions feasted on 16 oz-steaks, sweet corn, salad, French fries, cake...and lots of beverages. Six other Lions Clubs visited with us: Riverside (16 Lions!), Baden-Economy, Beaver Falls, Chippewa, New Brighton and New Bedford. (Hope you make the 2009 Steak Fry Meeting!)
Blind Picnic Goes for the Gold Another fun evening was this year’s Blind Picnic at The Lighthouse in New Brighton. The meal was prepared by the Lioness (Billie Wallace, Peggy Shelberg and Marge Hancharek ) Sue Thayer and Judy Wakelee. Sixteen Lions (Ben Thayer, Dave Frederick, JM Gishbaugher, Tom Hinds, Keith Householder, Tom and Matt Hudak, Brian McCarl, Bill Nelson, Dave O’Neill, Brian Rooney, Joe Seiber, Bill Stitt, John Wakelee, Bryan and Mark Carter) helped serve the meals to about 45 clients and their guests. Lion Ben Thayer and his wife Sue designed an Olympics theme for this year’s event. Games consisted of “The Water Cube,” “The Triathlon” and “Weight Lifting,” followed by the traditional “Cake Walk.” It was a fun, rewarding evening!

Lion Brian McCarl Awarded Builders Pin Lions Clubs International awarded Brian McCarl the Builders Pin for his recruitment of two members (Lions Rob Haller and Tom Pashuta) during the 2007-2008 Lions year.

District Governor to Visit Our 25 September Meeting
Our District Governor, Anna Marie Larkin, will be visiting with us at our 25 September meeting at the Lions Pavilion. We have been appointed the “Host” Club for this joint visitation that will include the Little Beaver Lioness and the Chippewa Lions.
We would like to have a good attendance.

White Cane Volunteers Needed
We need Lions and Lioness to help with this year’s White Cane Safety Days on Saturday and Sunday,
20 & 21 September, at Wal-Mart from 9 am to 9 pm. Volunteers will serve in three-hour shifts on those
days. There are 32 “time slots” for these two days. We’ve filled 13 slots to date. That leaves 19 slots yet
to be filled. This is an excellent activity to meet the community and to show your commitment to Lionism.

Lions Mobilize US$3 Million for China Earthquake
LCIF and Lions clubs members around the world have mobilized more than US$3 million in direct funding and relief supplies
to aid Lions-led relief efforts in China. To support immediate and long-term needs, Lions around the world are continuing to
respond. A designated LCIF account has been established to help channel donations for the disaster. (Please indicate China
Earthquake Fund in comments box.) A new video about Lions relief efforts in response to the disaster is now available on-line.
CSFII Concludes Having Surpassed US$200 Million
Campaign SightFirst II surpassed the challenge goal of US$200 million just in time for the final announcement of funds
raised at the convention in Bangkok, Thailand. The final announcement came with a grand celebration, knowing that Lions will
be able to continue the fight against preventable blindness for years to come.
US Philanthropist Makes Largest Donation to LCIF
On May 27, LCIF and CSFII received their largest contribution to date from Kenneth E. Behring, a U.S. philanthropist, and his
foundation, The Global Health and Education Foundation (GHEF). Behring and GHEF have made a matching contribution
of $7.5 million to fund various SightFirst projects around the world, with a special focus on providing cataract surgeries to individuals
throughout China.
Visit the LCIF Booth at the US/Canada Forum
The US/Canada Forum is quickly approaching. LCIF will have a booth for Lions to learn more about the projects, programs and
initiatives of the Foundation. Please stop by the booth to speak with LCIF staff, pick-up LCIF publications or make a donation to
LCIF, either to credit cards or cash.
New LCIF Exhibit Available
A new LCIF exhibit is available to clubs and districts to reserve for their convention or community fairs to promote the Foundation.
The tabletop exhibit provides an overview of LCIF programs. The exhibit is available free of charge on a first-come, first-served
basis. Contact LCIF Communication to inquire on reserving the exhibit.
Participate in Lions World Sight Day
Plan now for Lions World Sight Day. Lions are encouraged to hold a sight event during the month of October to be a part of this
worldwide event. President Al Brandel will preside over the International Lions World Sight Day, which will be held on the Navajo
Native American Reservation in Arizona. Lions will screen for diabetes and other diseases over three days. This year marks the 10th
anniversary of the event.

There are simple ways to show your support for LCIF. Give Back America has added LCIF to their online charity mail. Every time
that you shop through the Give Back America site, LCIF receives a generous donation. To find out more and start giving back to
