at Harry’s, beginning at 6:30 pm.

Emily Cameron Honored as April Blackhawk High School Student of the Month We honored Emily Cameron as our April Student of the Month. Emily is the daughter of Jeanne and James Cameron and the sister of Madelyn.
Emily is a senior at Blackhawk High School where she is a member of the Varsity Soccer Team, National Honor Society, the Soccer Club and the Boccee Club. She also is Layout Editor of the school newspaper, The Beat.
For hobbies, she enjoys piano, camping, painting and reading. Her community service activities include church events and dinners, being a camp counselor, cleaning yards for the elderly and National Honor Society activities (making cards and visiting McGuire Home to paint pumpkins).
She carries a 3.7 grade point average.
After graduation from Blackhawk High School she will attend either Duquesne University or the University of Pittsburgh, majoring in Business (Marketing and Advertising).
Lion Listeners Conduct 170 Sessions During the month of April Lion Listeners conducted 170 fifteen-minute reading sessions, bringing the total for the January-April period to 684 sessions. Thank you Lion Listeners!

Rose Sale: “Preparing More Roses Requires More Man-Hours!” Lion Laughner reminded us that if we want to sell more roses than last year, we are going to need more help than last year. “Preparing more roses requires more man-hours” emphasized Lion Bill. “That means we all must contribute more man-hours toward preparing this year’s roses. If you sign up for one day, your job is not done. We must manufacture roses for four days, not one! This is a mammoth project—we must contribute the hours!” A ‘Rose Manufacturing Line’ requires a ‘Dethorner’, two ‘Strippers’, two ‘Boxers’, two ‘Sleevers’ and one ‘Checker’ for a total of eight jobs. Lion Bill has Sign Up Sheets that list each job by hour for each day (Sunday through Wednesday). This is our major fundraiser that drives a major part of our donations. Please help us maintain these donations by volunteering to help with this fundraiser. We must prepare 3,000 dozen (36,000 roses)! The dates and times are: ? Sunday, 3 May—11 am-7 pm ? Darlington Days—29-30-31 May Lion Ferguson reminded us that the Lions Darlington Days is from the 29th thru the 31st of May (Friday-Saturday-Sunday). He stressed that help is needed in our Food Stand. Please volunteer your time—even an hour will help. (We want to avoid the understaffing of last year!) Lions/Lioness Have a Grand Day Many thanks to the Lions and Lioness who served as “substitute” grandparents at Northwestern’s “Grand Day” on Thursday, 23 April: Mary Anna Carter, Mark Carter, Judy Gotthardt, Keith Householder, Marlene Laughner, Brian McCarl, Tom Pashuta, Carol Podnar, Paul Mulig and Keith Staneart (...and his wife!)
Eight Work At Beacon Lodge Eight Little Beaver Lions worked Friday-Sunday at this year’s Beacon Lodge Work Weekend: Tom Cekovich, Alan Ferguson, Ben Hostetler, Keith Householder, Bill Laughner, Brian McCarl, JM Gishbaugher. According to Lion Bill, “We got a lot of work done such as a new roof on the gazebo, stone wall rebuilt, railings painted, and area beautification.” Thanks!
Wine Dinner Tastes GREAT! Fifty people enjoyed a gourmet dinner, served with four, fine Californian wines at the Grand Valley Inn on Wednesday, 29 April.
Seven Lions Vision Screen 119 Students Seven Lions (Mark and Mary Anna Carter, Grace and Alan Ferguson, Keith Householder, Melanie Irwin and John Wakelee) screened the vision of 119 children during the Northwestern/Patterson Kindergarten Registration on 27, 28 and 29 April from 8:30 am to 4 pm.
Bob Lackner Memorial--29 May The Bob Lackner Memorial Polo game kicks off the three-day Darlington Days. The Memorial begins at 6 pm at the Polo Field. The cost is $20/person and includes admission to the game ($5) and to the “Tailgate” food and beverage ($15). Contact Lion Ferguson for tickets.

Lighthouse To Hold “Night-At-The-Races” On Friday, 8 May Lion B. McCarl
announced that “Night-At-The-Races” at the Lighthouse is scheduled for 6
pm on Friday, 8 May. Admission tickets are $25/person. Horses are $15
each. Business race horses are $50 each. For tickets or to sponsor a

Blood Drive Help Needed—29 June Although our Blood Drive is about two months away (Monday, 29 June, 2 -7 pm at the Darlington Municipal Building), it is time to organize volunteers to help and people to donate blood. We Need Volunteers: “Greeters” (M. Carter) ? ask each donor for ID, ? ask them to read required donor information ? direct them to an interview nurse.
(After the interview, a nurse draws the blood.)
“Walkers” ? escort each donor from the collection bed to the Canteen.
“Servers” ? work in the Canteen and serve each donor a snack and a drink. ? assure that donors stay in the Canteen for 15 minutes. We need two “Walkers” and two “Servers”—one each for the periods 2-5 pm and 5-8 pm. Please contact Lion M. Carter ([email protected]; 724-846-4413) if you can help.
We Need Blood Donors: It is not too early to start asking people to donate blood on 29 June. Donation will start at 2 pm and continue until 7 pm. It takes about 45 minutes to give a pint of blood. In January, we collected 32 units of blood. In June we will be facing the Memorial Day Vacations, so we need to contact people early. As soon as you get a donor committed to a time, contact Lion Mark, so a time-slot can be reserved. (...and don’t forget to sign up to give blood yourself!)
