Arbor Day

“Ray, sapling!”

“Where?”

“Twelve o'clock.”

“Got it.”

--From the episode ‘An Eye for an Eye.’--

“I can’t believe you’re making me plant a tree!”

“Well, Ray, if you hadn’t hit that defenseless sapling with your car we wouldn’t be here today, now would we?”

“No, I guess not! I guess we could be somewhere a lot worse, like a dumpster!”

“Now, Ray. It’s not as bad as you think,” Fraser pouted as he cradled a little sapling in his arms. He followed Ray through the city park, looking for the perfect spot to plant their new sapling.

“Benny! We were trying to prevent a murder from occurring that night! It’s not my fault that sapling jumped in front of my car!”

“Now that’s just silly, Ray.”

The near murder Ray was talking about was that almost committed by Herb Colling, who had decided to take the law into his own hands against a mugger who terrorized the local neighborhood for far too long. Ray and Fraser were able to prevent a tragedy from occurring that night between the two men in the park, but during their rescue attempt Ray had mowed down a poor, innocent sapling with his Riv.

Fraser was mortified. He promptly convinced Ray of his transgression and the cop conceded to replace the valuable loss with a brand new sapling as soon as the ground thawed with the approaching warmth of spring.

And without fail, when Chicago had finally experienced its very first warm days after a long stretch of cold winter, Fraser quickly reminded Ray of his promise.

Both men had searched all morning for a small sapling in the various home and gardening stores around Chicago. It was important to find the right species of tree that would thrive properly in the city park, especially during the harsh, winter months. Fraser made sure of it.

Ray then had to get a special permit to plant the tree on city grounds. Fraser made sure of that, too. Everybody in the bullpen had laughed at them and Welsh threw his arms up in disgust. The Lieutenant allowed the cop and Mountie to plant their baby tree only during their lunch hour.

“This seems to be a good spot to plant the sapling,” Fraser stated confidently as he finally came to halt, licking his thumb and sticking it in the air to determine wind direction.

“Humph.” Ray put on his dark shades and glanced surreptitiously around the park. “I hope nobody recognizes me. I’m supposed to be a highly respected law enforcement officer, not some nature freak.”

Ray took off his suit jacket and rolled up his shirtsleeves. He flung his expensive silk tie over his shoulder.

“Give me the shovel and let’s plant this baby.”

“Yes, Ray.”

It warmed Fraser to think that Ray would do this, no matter how much the detective objected. Ray simply did it for him because he asked him.

Fraser watched Ray dig into the ground. It was a wonderful, early spring day with the last gray traces of winter melting away. The sun was warm and the breeze was light and cool. Fraser felt invigorated by it as he took in the lovely sites of the city park.

Fraser couldn’t help noticing Ray’s ass.

It was a perfect, pert ass that flexed beautifully with each exertion the Italian made. Fraser was highly impressed. Ray’s ass was as beautiful as nature itself, as beautiful as the trees, skies, streams, mountains, and oceans---

“So, Benny? What do think of my hole? Is it deep enough for you?”

“Excuse me?” Fraser became flustered.

Ray was now staring at him over his shoulder, his upper lip beaded with sweat. The Italian was panting from the heavy exertion.

“My hole, Fraser! Do you like it?”

“Yes, Ray. Er… it’s very nice.” Fraser blushed.

Ray rolled his eyes and tossed the shovel aside. He picked up the baby sapling to drop it into the earth.

“Hold on, Ray. You need to ease it in very gently.”

“I know what I’m doing.”

“I don’t want to damage the roots, they are very delicate.”

“I’m not going to hurt your little tree, Benny. Trust me.”

Slender hands lowered the sapling into the earth and tenderly patted the soil around it, securing the little plant in its new home in Chicago.

The cop stood up to examine his work. “There! I planted a tree and the world is a better place for it. You happy now?”

“Yes, Ray. The world is a better place thanks to you.”

“Yeah, yeah.” Ray shrugged and brushed the dirt from his slacks. “Fraser, will you look at me! We need to stop by your place so I can change my suit.”

“You might also need a shower, Ray.”

“Huh?” Ray looked up at him, his lips slightly pursed. It was difficult for Fraser to tell what was going on inside Ray’s head with his hazel eyes hidden behind dark sunglasses. Ray loved his new shades, he said it added mystery to his physique. Ray was right about that.

“Maybe you’re right, Benny,” Ray slowly agreed with a smile. “I could probably use a shower. I did work up a sweat.”

The two men walked casually to the Riv, enjoying the warmer weather and not in a particular rush to end their lunch hour so soon.

“Perhaps a back rub, too?” Fraser ventured further.

“Whoa! A back rub?” Ray tried his best to look shocked at his lover. “It was only a scrawny, little sapling!”

“Someday it will be a huge redwood, Ray,” Fraser implied with a sly grin, shyly ducking his head.

“Now that’s something I gotta see,” Ray purred as he led the Mountie to his car. “Perhaps during our lunch hour?”

“Understood.”

-The End-

Note: Arbor Day is a nationally celebrated observance that encourages tree planting and care. Founded by J. Sterling Morton in Nebraska in 1872, National Arbor Day is celebrated each year on the last Friday in April.

Not only is this ficlet very smutty, it’s educational, too.
