Mystical Ying and Yang

Chapter 11: From The Darkness

Striding into the assembly room, seeing all the frightened and haggard faces, Sakura suddenly felt guilty for taking time off the clan's business especially now the darkness was showing itself.

Taking the head of the room, she waited as all of them hushed down.

"You all know why where here. You may not know the enemy but they will be on us soon. When they come, we will fight not for some glorious cause, but to survive. The gods have given us time to prepare, and we must take advantage of every moment of it. Once the enemy comes, all you determine how safe we'll be. If we take matters into our own hands I know we will succeed even in the face of darkness."

"I'm going to Gold Ridge, to help all we can and get a good idea of how this darkness works, I also need at least 50 for me to command," she said.

Hands were raised, the meeting ended, and Sakura and set fled to their mounts.

"Flight formation!" called Sakura as she tied her hair in a bun while she gripped Silver Star with her knees. 50 dragons were dotted in the sky, bronze, white and many other were seen as the all flew in a triangle, Sakura out the front.

"It will not be easy" tooted Silver, as they glided to one side.

'Things nowadays are never easy' replied Sakura in mind-speech.

'All you have to do is to believe that you can' was a call from Fiery.

'But so much seems to depend on my actions. I wish this had never happened. And I caused it upon the world' replied Sakura.

'There is no time for self-pity or worrying.' Said Silver, joining in.

'All you have is the time that has been given to you. You only have the power to choose what we shall do with the remaining time.'

"Well then I will have to try my best" she whispered, as dark clouds of smoke and fog showed on the horizon.

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

It was strangely silent. The ground was unnaturally warm as it the earth had been recently baked. The grass was smoking, dry and grey. No sound stirred and nothing moved in the fog and smoke.

As the 50 odd riders and Sakura came down to land, they all felt a currant that raced through them. To them, it looked like what the Meili would have looked like when it was corrupted after Lord Lyornes's rule.

Slowly as they approached the place where Gold Ridge was, but to the horror, the place was in burnt ruins. The rest that could not be burned was torn apart, and even signs of dragons were about.

Sakura ordered everyone to search for the place looking for any survivors. She herself looked, tears shedding as she remembered how lovely this place had looked 2 years ago when she had last been to visit. One of her best friends had been head of this special valley; their sole income came from the beautiful gold that came out of the sides of the valley.

As everyone searched in the ruins, she turned past a corner of the valley intent on a special place where Rika and herself had been many times before.

She found it. It was wedged between two huge rocks, moved there deliberately by dragons. It hid their hiding place well for if Gold Ridge was ever to be in danger; the young and the helpless were to shelter here. If danger became too much and no one came to find the refugees, then they were to stay there as there were stores of food.

Only all the clan leaders knew, Sakura best. She shed tears, crying for Rika, knowing her friend would have sacrificed her own life for her people.

Gold Ridge was famous for it's pure gold, and to every person that lived there, they received a gift as soon as they could remember. It was a gold medallion, and as their gold was purest, only Gold Ridge gold could open the Gateway.

Sakura had her own medallion, given to her as soon as she had become a Clan Leader. She used it now, letting the solid metal cool her sweaty palms and calm her shaking hands. She slotted it into the golden gate, and as the gold from the Gateway recognised the gold medallion it clicked. Pushing the Gate, she passed it and it closed back behind her.

She kept going down the long corridor, which was lit with a dim light from the high ceiling above. Finally, sounds started to echo, all around her, weeping, crying and sobs of cheerless women and children.

She passed the last corner, to feast her eyes on a small group.

Five women, all with babes in their arms, 10 children scattered around and a old couple too old to help with the defence of Gold Ridge.

'There so little people left' she thought, the horror hidden as the tiny band saw her.

She walked towards them, stopping on the way to scoop up a crying 5 year old who was too young to understand that her parents were most likely dead, but old enough to know there was something wrong.

"Come, we have to get out of here, before the Darkness finds you in here." She said to the refugees, they had crowded all around her.

She led them back, cradling the youngster in her arms, rocking her to sleep, the child's black locks covering its face. Sakura looked down on the little girl's face, seeing the innocence show while it's occupant slept. To think that many years ago she had the same innocence to her, an air that made her protected from the world, until everything went wrong and she lost her father.

Everything changed after that. Her whole life was turned upside down, sudden responsibilities and challenges, lots of authority and danger and evil had shown its face.

'Life will never be the same. All of us will be changed, maybe for the better or worse. I guess, all will be revealed to us in due time.' She thought, as the sunlight greeted them as the Gate opened.

As their tiny band made their way to the dragon riders, the adult's distress woke some of the babes as they all started weeping again, seeing the burnt and charred ruins.

A rider made his way to Sakura, taking off his helmet as she told her softly there were no survivors. There wasn't even signs of the dead or fights. Only burnt and damaged property beyond hope of rebuilding.

Packing the survivors away on the dragons and handing over the 5-year-old girl, she sent some of the riders back to clan grounds, taking away the remainders of the Gold Ridge population.

As Sakura mounted Silver Star and prepared to depart from the horrendous wreck, a cry sounded, one that after that event happened, no one there wanted every to hear again.

A swarm of yhoras, which were huge mutated cats, yellow and 1/2 the size of a dragon, flew into sight. Goblins were riding them, and their cry made many of her group shudder.

"Mount up!" she called, panic starting to fill her, as they took to the air.

An arrow shot past her not a metre away. Staring up ahead, she saw a few of the goblins, armed with bows and arrows. There seemed like there were a multitude, crowding the sky, almost blocking the watery sunlight from sight.

"Retreat!! Riders retreat!" yelled Sakura, clinging to Silver as they lifted off ground and started flying.

As her whole group started leaving the horrors behind, Sakura took one last fleeting glance at the army of yhoras.

They didn't seem to be following them, as if some unbidden command stayed them. Their calls and shrieks tore the air, leaving madness that only evil held. At their front, there was something that tore Sakura's heart most.

A black dragon.

What'll happen next? Chapter 12!
