| The first people to live in Brazil were Native Americans. The Portugese though took over in the 1500's and forced the Native Americans to work on plantations. Many died of diseases. Because of this, the Portugese needed workers, so they purchased Africans. Even though enslavement ended in 1888, many Africans stayed. In 1822 Brazil became a monarchy, and about 70 years later became a republic. Today it is between a dicatorship and democracy.T |
