A "Victorian" in Ponsonby, Auckland.
Currently being used as a backpacker's hostel.
Buildings similar to this also appear in San Francisco.
The explanation for this is simple.
San Francisco burned in the great earthquake and fire of 1911.
So that city was being rebuilt at the same time as Ponsonby was being laid out for the first time.
San Francisco is actually made of New Zealand Kauri (well, the Victorians are).
Clearly while the timber was going to America, design ideas (and architects?) were flowing in the opposite direction.
