Billy the Kid

The Death of Billy the Kid

After Billy the Kid escaped from New Mexico Jail. Sheriff Garrett thought he is still in the country. With his two partners; who were John Poe and Thomas Mc Kinney, he went to mouth of Tayban Arroyo, five miles of Fort Sumner, to arrest Billy the Kid. Because of Poe was a stranger, he went to the town to make observation. When Poe returned, he had no news about Kid. But they were sure Kid was there. Then they went to Maxwell's grounds to talk about Kid. Not more than sixty yards from Maxwell's house there were some old buildings and some of them were occupied by the Mexicans. They approached to these houses and concealed themselves to listen to the men who were speaking Spanish. Kid was one of the man of that group. He wore a broad brimmed hat, a dark vest and pants. After a while , Kid went to get some beef with a butcher knife. When Sheriff Garrett saw this, he went near to one of Kid's friend Pete. While Garrett was asking questions about Kid to Pete, Kid came. Kid saw the man near Pete but did not recognize that he was the Sheriff and asked many times " Who comes there who is it, Pete?" Also Sheriff Garrett was not sure if he was Kid. Later Maxwell recognized him and said " That's him! " Kid also saw Maxwell and to protect himself he raised quickly his pistol but Garrett was much faster than Kid and fired his gun, killing the twenty-one year old professional killer.
They buried Kid in the military graveyard at Fort Sumner. In the country there were many unmarked graves and the skeletons of all sizes and ages... Sheriff Garrett said he was sure that Kid's body lays undisturbed in the grave.
