TITLE: Fireworks and Independence Dani Lampert is at a loss since her first love, to whom she planned to be married, suddenly broke their engagement. She travels alone to a small coastal Oregon town for the Independence Day holiday in an effort to break out of the shell of grief and misery that she has become locked inside. Cody Shepherd sees her from across the street and literally knocks her off her feet in his urgency to meet her. When she stoops to pick up a penny off the floor, he opens the soda shop door and hits her. From that moment on, they spend most of the holiday weekend together. But as they get acquainted, Dani realizes she is on the rebound and perhaps it would be unwise to jump into a new relationship at once. They part, leaving her haunted by memories of the blissful time they spent together. Ms. Mahn has penned a short but sweet and almost haunting tale, making her characters very real and absorbing with a few deftly constructed paragraphs. The reader feels at once that these two are meant to be together and hopes against hope that things will work out. I will not spoil the story by revealing the ending, but rest assured it is a romance with a strong promise of happily ever after. If you are looking for a nice respite from the current hot, hotter and hottest fad in the romance genre, Fireworks and Independence is a lovely antidote. It is an old fashioned feel-good story that will stay with you after you set the book aside. |
