When a threatening letter shows up for Lexie at her own place of business, she has no choice but to turn to the police. But theres a glitch in that plan: Lexie and Police Chief Jon Winston share a past. A past that has left Lexie bittersweet, and still very much in love with Winston. Can old wounds be bridged in order to find Lexies stalker? And what of Jon- and his regrets for the pain he caused this vibrant woman? Dark Betrayals by Madyson Hunter is an intricate suspense romance, with many plot twists and surprises. Heroine Lexie is a complex and very likable character; Jon Winston is at once a dedicated professional and very sexy. I was impressed by the side-characters, as well. No paperboard caricatures here; rather, a well developed cast, whose own involvement in the story mesmerizes. What sets this novel apart from most stories of its genre is the writers clever interweaving of erotica, romance and suspense. The sex scenes are diverse and very arousing, and the sensuality never once undermined the plots integrity. I also enjoyed the realism of backdrop in the town of St. James Parish, Louisiana. In books set in the modern South, Ive often been disappointed by the authors use of sappy nostalgia for atmosphere. This isnt the case with Dark Betrayals. Theres a genteel noir that only compliments the storyline. I found myself rooting for Lexie and Jon all the way through this enjoyable read, and came away very satisfied with the way the writer resolved the mystery of Lexies stalker. Dark Betrayals is one book sure to enthrall both readers of erotic romance and of suspense. This is one of the most impressive books by a first-time writer this reviewer has read in a very long time. I highly recommend Dark Betrayals, and am eager to see what Madyson Hunter comes out with next! |
