Jack Draper has become very successful in America but dimly recalls his life in an orphanage in Wales. In dreams, he goes back to visit his one real friend, a dragon that he called Puff, after the children's folk song of the 1960s. The dreams become increasingly erotic and disturbing. Jack has reached the point where chronic insomnia is endangering his health. Although Jack is gay, he is troubled by his visions of making love with this dragon when he changes into human form. Finally, at the urging of his new therapist, Dr. Lledrith, who he has learned is also Welsh, he decides to go back to Wales. Maybe he can see how much, if any, of his strange mixture of dream and memory is real. Without giving too much away, there is not much more of the story that can be told except to say that all ends well with some surprising revelations and strong hints that there will be sequels in the future. Ms. Austin handles this unusual relationship with a deftly sensual and tender eroticism. Her characters are powerful and real, for all their strangeness, and win their way into the reader's heart. I applaud her imagination and her skill in imparting this story.

Although I do not normally read m/m romances, this one was not uncomfortable for me. I'd recommend it highly to a reader seeking to branch out into new levels in the range of relationships and situations beyond the usual m/f romance, erotic or not. Dragon's Egg is a powerful and moving tale that makes one almost believe dragons could exist and wish for one to bond with.
