| Much More than DIBs and DOBs Its fashionable to knock Scouts, but I am a scout and I am proud of it. Through scouting I have learnt to climb, survive in the wild, hiked in the Peaks and the Lakes, seen sights many will never see, become a qualified sailor, made many friends, travelled Europe, and amongst many other things have met the Queen. Sunday 21st April 2002, was probably the highlight of my many years of Scouting, when I was rewarded for all that I have done, by gaining my Queens Scout award and marching around Windsor before meeting the Queen. It was an amazing day and I feel very proud to have been given this oppertunity Whilst meeting the Queen and parading round Windsor was a highlight, I have had many others. 142nd Fulwood Scouts I have always been a member of Fulwood Scouts and some of my fondest memories are from my time in the Scouts. If you think Scouting is just about collecting badges and wearing silly uniforms then think again. Until I met the Queen I never wore uniform trousers, or possessed them. Whilst camping in remote farmers fields, cooking over an open fire, swimming in Rivers, making rafts etc might not be everyones cup of tea it certainly was mine. (And its amazing how many companies now send employees on such courses to develop team skills) Brexbachtal International Scout Camp 2000 When I volunteered to work on a campsite for the Moerser Troop, I didnt really know what I was letting my self in for. However the decision to go was not one which I regret. As I could speak both English and German I was invited to run the Bar, and I was to be paid in free drinks. At only 60p for a beer and 30p for Jack Daniels and a mixer the bar was thus very popular! And I made many friendsas the Female Spanish Venture Scouts were invited to join us at the bar too! Scouting has provided a great platform for me and many others to meet new people of the same age, share a drink and a joke, and have fun. Whatever people think about Scouts, all the people I have met within the movement have had a positive outlook on Scouts. Please if you are not a Scout dont be stuck with the usual stereotypes, of campfires, rubbing sticks together, collecting badges saying dib dib dib, dob dob dob. As I have said, I have gained a lot from Scouting, so please dont write it off as some unfashionable group of sad people! |
