(I Know Loves) What Made You Say That

Maybe tonight Im gonna tell him
How I feel
Maybe Ill leave well enough alone
Maybe, just maybe
Hell wanna be my baby
But what if hes got plans of his own

Amy sighed and tilted her head back towards the clear night sky, smiling as a soft summer breeze fingered its way through her long red hair. Jason sat quietly beside her, staring off into the distance and glancing down at his hands every once in a while.

Poor guy Amy thought to herself as she watched him out of the corner of her eye. It was no secret around the locker room what had happened with him and his fiance the week before. From what Matt had told her, Jason had broken off the engagement without even giving a reason, hed just called the poor girl up and called it quits. She hadnt even believed it herself until now, seeing the stress written so plainly on the handsome mans face was enough to break her heart.

Glancing nervously over her shoulder, Amy scanned the dimly lit beach in search of her partners in crime - Matt, Jeff, and Adam were due back any time now from getting ice cream for everyone. Not seeing them, she cautiously inched closer to Jay and rested her head on his shoulder, feeling him tense up slightly.

You wanna talk about it? She asked softly, relief flowing through her when Jays shoulders relaxed and she felt his arm come up around her. For the next twenty minutes Amy listened attentively while Jay told her about everything - the fights he and his fiance had been having, how she had only been attracted to him because of his profession, and the subsequent phone call the week before that had Jay breaking off the relationship. After he was finished, Amy sighed sadly and gave his shoulder a squeeze.

You know Jay-Jay, there are people out there who do love you for you, and not just for what you do. Jason looked over at her and shrugged, a sad smile tugging at his lips.

You think so? Amy smiled and reached over to gently push his long blond hair back over his shoulder, her fingers itching to run themselves through the silky softness of it. Patience she told herself.

Jay, I know there are people out there who love you. People like me she thought ruefully. Sighing and laying back in the cool sand, Amy desperately tried to push back the overwhelming emotions that threatened to boil over.

Shed been in love with Jason ever since theyd started working together nearly a year before. When shed first come into the federation, Matt and Jeff had introduced her around to nearly everyone, but only Jason had been nice enough to actually stick around and make sure that she felt comfortable. Theyd struck up a quick friendship that lasted in and out of the ring, always hanging around each other and venting on lifes little details.

Shortly after that, Jason had become engaged, and their friendship had been put on the backburner. Not by Jays choice mind you, his girlfriend had been extremely jealous and freaked out when shed learned about Amy. It had hurt the both of them, but Amy had respected Jays girlfriends wishes and had kept a low profile, instead concentrating on her work.
Now the possessive girlfriend was out of the picture though, and Amy suddenly found herself fighting the urge to confess her feelings to Jay. When shed mentioned it to Matt a while back, hed told her to go for it - he had a feeling she would be surprised, hed said.

So now here she was sitting on Myrtle Beach alone with the man she loved, and he didnt even have a clue. Biting her lower lip in between her teeth, Amy closed her eyes and exhaled loudly.

You wanna talk about it? Opening her eyes slowly, Amy felt her heart jump when she saw Jason leaning back on his elbows and looking down at her with a small smile on his lips. God he was gorgeous

Could she tell him now? Should she tell him now? Amy took a deep breath and smiled up at him, her clear hazel eyes meeting his in the semi-darkness.

Now Im waiting for the perfect moment
Looking for the perfect phrase
The one I finally choose is simply
I love you
As the words came out I heard a voice
Inside me say

JayI - I love you. Amy held her breath and waited for the inevitable rejection. God, I moved too fastits too soon she thought worriedly as she watched his face for indications of his disgust. When he remained silent and didnt say anything, Amy knew that the worst had happened - he was angry.

Amy rolled away from him and started to stand up, her heart breaking inside her chest and tears stinging in her eyes. Refusing to meet his eyes, she hurriedly started making her way across the sand towards the boardwalk, her cheeks burning with humiliation. After a few steps she felt a warm hand on her shoulder and tried to shrug it off.

Amy, wait. Stopping suddenly, Amy twirled around and faced Jason, her hands wiping frantically at the tears that were beginning to spill. Jason sighed and ran his hands back through his hair, his eyes searching hers worriedly.

Im not angry Ames, dont run from me. Amy closed her eyes and was immediately swept up into a fierce hug, her face burying against Jays neck. Wrapping her arms around him, Amy clung tightly to Jay and willed herself to stop crying. Seconds later she felt Jasons hand tip her chin up towards his face so that she was looking at him.

Amy, he started hesitantly, when I told you I broke off the engagement, I didnt tell you why. It wasnt just because of the fights and our motivations for being together.it was something else.

When I first met you and got to know you, I knew that you were special. It hurt me to know that you had to give up being my friend for the sake of my relationship, a lot of people would be resentful, but you werent.

As the months went by I started realizing that something was missing in my life, I realized that the relationship wasnt working out and that Id been fooling myself into believing that I could spend the rest of my life with herI couldnt. So I finally got up the nerve and broke it off. I told her that I was in love with someone else Amy blinked in confusion at Jays words, unsure of what he was trying to tell her.
Soso youre not angry with me? She asked dumbly. Jay chuckled and shook his head, bending down and kissing her on the forehead.

Amy, how could I be angry with you when I love you? Amys eyes widened and she felt her mouth drop open in shock. Smiling at her reaction, Jay leaned down and softly pressed his lips against hers.

I love you he whispered into her lips. Amy smiled against his mouth and looped her arms around Jays shoulders, running her fingers through his silky hair. I love you too

What made you say that
Was it the moonlight, was it the starlight
In your eyes
What made you say that
Have you been listening to your heart
Its too late now
I dont want to take it back
Cause I know loves
What made me say that

I look up to see his reaction
And a smile slowly spread across his face
He said what took you so long
Thats what Ive been waiting on
I thought youd take forever and a day

What made you say that
Was it the moonlight, was it the starlight
In your eyes
What made you say that
Have you been listening to your heart
Its too late now
I wont let you take it back
Cause I know loves
What made you say that

The End
