Chapter 9 "Reap What You Sow"
Hunter and 'Taker searched desperately for Adam and Chris. As Hunter neared the last door in the long hallway, he glanced back at 'Taker who was watching him intently, worry and fear etched on his face. This was the last room that they hadn't searched.
Hunter's hand gripped the door handle as he closed his eyes and cast a slight prayer to anyone that would listen. Although, he didn't know why anyone would listen. Since he came to be part owner of Eden, he had turned his back on everything holy. He had practically renounced God. Here in the confines of Eden, he was the God. The master.
"Hunter," 'Taker whispered as he laid a hand on Hunter's trembling shoulder.
"Sorry, I was just thinking....." He wanted to desperately tell 'Taker that he was sorry for all the things that he had done, and that if he got Chris back, safe and sound, Eden would cease to exist, but he couldn't. He couldn't afford to appear weak in the big man's eyes.
"We'll find them, and then we'll take care of Stephanie," 'Taker growled.
"Thanks 'Taker," Hunter whispered.
"Call me Mark, 'Taker is my Eden name. I have a feeling after today, I'll never step foot in Eden again."
"Mark," Hunter whispered, savoring the word as it slipped from his mouth, like a forbidden sweet.
Hunter sighed as he turned the door knob and shoved the door open. He was barely able to avoid the shoe as it whizzed past his head.
"GET OUT!" The angry male patron roared, followed by giggles of a young female.
Hunter quickly shut the door and looked at Mark, who was shaking his head and pacing nervously in the middle of the hallway.
"Where could she take them?" Mark asked in part desperation and frustration. "We've searched all the rooms."
Hunter frowned as he remembered one. One that hadn't been used in years. "There's one more.......the auction room, but.... we've never sold our flowers."
"She wouldn't!" Mark snarled.
"I hope to God that she hasn't already," Hunter whispered as he took off running with Mark right behind him.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Stephanie smiled innocently as the two men burst into the empty, dimly lit room. As she looked at Hunter's muscular torso, she felt herself getting wet.
Hunter frowned as he heard the sound of a helicopter departing outside. He ran to the window just in time to see Chris' terrified face staring out of the small window.
"NO!" Hunter screamed as he beat his fists on the window.
Mark merely stood as if in shock. His mind was reeling. He had lost Adam for good, and it was all Stephanie's fought. His body began to tremble as he clutched his fists tightly.
Stephanie smiled at their pain. Their misery. They so deserved it. They were the two men that she had trusted the most, but they had betrayed her. Fallen in love with Adam and Jason. Forgotten about her.
"Who did you sell them to?" Hunter growled as he stalked towards her.
"Wouldn't you like to know?" She hissed back, her face contorted with hatred.
Hunter raised his hand to hit her, but found that he couldn't. He had never hit a woman in his entire life, and even though he hated Stephanie more than anything, he couldn't do it. "Why are you doing this? I thought you wanted a third person in our relationship?" Hunter asked confused.
"You loved him more!" She hissed, her voice full of venom. "He had to be eliminated."
Mark growled. He had heard enough from the bitch. He reached out and wrapped his hand around her slender throat and squeezed. He smiled as she coughed and sputtered as he pulled her to him. "Where's Faarooq and Bradshaw?" Mark growled, his voice deep and sinister. He knew that he could easily get the truth from them.
Stephanie paused and smiled as she pointed at the back door.
Hunter immediately rushed to the door and pushed it open, but gasped and stood back as he looked down.
"What's wrong?" Mark asked as he walked over to Hunter, dragging Stephanie with him.
Mark's eyes widened at the sight of the two men that lay on the ground with a bullet hole through their skulls. Blood pooled outwards from their body along with chunks of something that looked strangely like cauliflower. Mark felt the bile rise in his throat as he realized that it was their brains laying splattered on the dirty cement. "Fuck!" He growled as he threw Stephanie backwards.
Stephanie screamed as she landed hard on her posterior, but then proceeded to laugh, normal at first and then the laughter sounded completely psychotic.
"How could you?" Hunter growled at Stephanie. Faarooq and Bradshaw didn't deserve to die like that. Deep down Hunter knew that they were just following orders.
Stephanie paused from laughing and gave him a defiant look. "They would have told you who I sold them to, but now they will carry that secret to their graves," she hissed. She frowned for a second and then pulled herself up. She adjusted her short black mini-skirt as she sauntered to Hunter, casually wrapping her arms around his neck. "Don't you see, Hunter? All you'll ever need is me."
Hunter's body began to shake as he pushed her away, causing her to once again trip and fall on her posterior. "You? I only married you for the money. For the power. It was never about you. I HATE YOU!"
Stephanie stared at him shock. "You don't mean that!" She screamed.
"Read my lips bitch. I MEAN EVERY WORD!"
"NO!" Stephanie screamed as she placed her hands on her ears as if trying to block out Hunter's words as she thrashed her head from side to side. "You love me. Only me."
"NEVER!" Hunter hissed. "YOU DISGUST ME!"
Stephanie whirled around, her face contorted with hate. "Well then, if I can't have you, no one can." She pulled out a small control device that was hidden between her breasts and pressed the button.
"What have you done?" Mark gasped as he grabbed the control from her hand.
"It's a bomb, you moron. I'm taking you two and all of Eden to hell with me," she growled.
"Fuck that!" Mark growled as he grabbed Hunter's arm and slowly stepped across the dead bodies of the APA.
"YOU'LL NEVER ESCAPE ME!" Stephanie screamed after them, followed by demented laughter. She simply watched amused. Where did they think they were going? There was a steep cliff behind Eden. She shrugged their shoulders, maybe they prefer jumping to their deaths instead of fire. It didn't matter as long as they both died.
"What are you doing?" Hunter asked. "Shouldn't we warn the others?"
"We can't save them, there's no time. Besides, they'll never know what hit them," Mark whispered almost apologetically.
"NO!" Hunter gasped, "We have to go back!"
Hunter turned to go back, but Mark grabbed him by the shoulder and whirled him around. His fist connected firmly with Hunter's jaw knocking him out cold.
Mark threw Hunter across his shoulder as he ran towards the small cliff behind Eden. He didn't even pause as he jumped off the edge and dived for the sparkling blue water below, paying that it was deep enough and trying to keep a tight grip on Hunter as they fell.
As he neared the water, he heard a huge explosion directly above him and he turned to see the sky lit up with sparks of yellow and black flames. The Garden of Eden was no more.
"Crazy bitch," Mark growled right before he hit the water clutching Hunter to him close.
