Story type: AU Summary: Tragedy strikes leaving Christian all alone. I rewatched City of Angels last night and this popped into my head. Never written a story like this, and I hope it's not too lame. If you really want to cry, listen to "Angel" by Sara McLachlan. It's what I listened to when I wrote this. Lyrics at end of story. (DF's Note: I cry every time I hear that damn song ^^ Like I need encouraging for that! *g*) ******************************************************************** Adam squinted as he tried to see through the heavy drenching rain that pounded unmercifully onto his windshield, almost blinding him. It was getting hard to keep his car between the yellow lines. 'Damn, it hadn't rained like this in ages, why did it have to pick tonight?' He silently thought as he reached for his cell phone to call Christian, knowing how his angel worried when he was late. He saw a faint pair of headlights approaching in the distance. When he raised his eyes back up, all he could do was scream as he realized the approaching car was headed right towards him in his lane. A sickening sound of tires screeching, metal crunching, and glass shattering echoed in the darkness followed by an eerie silence. The rain slowed, only a slow steady mist continued to fall. ************************************ Christian bit his bottom lip as he looked at the time on the grandfather's clock that Adam had bought for him. Adam was an hour late. Christian shivered as he buttoned his solid white pajama top as he looked out of the huge bay window wondering where his love could be. It wasn't like Adam to be late without calling. Something was wrong, he could feel it. Christian continued to stare at the dark driveway that led to the house, watching as the rain drops softly splattered against the window. He placed his hand flat against the window. "Where are you?" Christian softly whispered in the darkness as tears rolled down his face as he listened to the ticking of the clock. ************************************* Trooper Lance Storm shook his head as he looked at the lifeless body of the young man before him. The young man was beautiful with long, flowing blonde hair, which was now crimson red. The man's eyes were open and he could tell amongst all the dried blood and dirt that the man had shed a single tear before he had died. Was it for the all the things that he could have done if he had lived longer? Or was it for a special someone who he would see no more? Lance jumped as he saw the flashing lights of the approaching ambulance. As the medics hopped out to retrieve the stretcher and gear, he motioned for them to stop. "He's gone," he said shaking his head. "Such a shame. Young guy. Had his whole life ahead of him." Lance and the two paramedics glanced to where the driver of the second car sat. He was so drunk that he could barely sit up. "It should have been him," one of the paramedics whispered. Lance nodded in agreement as he glanced at the lifeless body in the other car. The impact had been so tremendous that the young man had died almost instantly. Lance was almost thankful for that, at least he didn't suffer. *************************************** Christian jumped as the phone rang. He looked at the clock. Adam was now two hours late. Christian stared at the caller ID. It wasn't his beloved, but he frowned at the ID name that flashed. With a shaky hand he picked up the phone and pressed the talk button. "Hello?" he said softly, holding his breath as he listened to the other voice. "Yes, I'm Christian." Christian started to tremble as he listened to the other voice on the other end. Tears rolled down his face as the phone slid from his hand hitting the carpeted floor with a soft thud. Christian walked to the front door and opened it, walking out, not noticing that the rain had finally stopped. He let the darkness embrace him as he fell to his knees, his whole body trembling. "NO!" Christian screamed. "Come back!" Christian pleaded. "You promised never to leave me! You promised!" Christian fell to the ground, curling up into a fetal position, losing all will to live. "Why did you take him from me?" Christian asked as he looked to the heavens sobbing. "I hate you!" ************************************* ~ONE MONTH LATER~ Jeff frowned as he watched Christian as he stood looking out the window, never leaving it unless forced to. He waited there patiently on someone that would never come. Who couldn't come. Jeff had been Christian's nurse since the beginning of his admission. Christian had been delusional and violent when they first brought him in. No matter how much they sedated him, Christian would always find a window to look out of. He would simply stand and stare out of it, but would become very violent if forced to leave it. Finally the doctors had given up and allowed him to look out the window. It was clear that they couldn't stop him. Jeff smiled. Christian was very determined. The doctors said he had always been slow and was probably mildly retarded. If truth be know, Jeff thought the doctors were retards. Christian was just confused. He had lost his only love in a car wreck, who wouldn't be confused and hurting. What did his parents do? Stick him in some mental institution. That's one way to get rid of your gay unwanted son. "Christian, it's time for your medicine," Jeff said softly as he approached Christian, careful not to startle him. Christian turned slightly and took the pills, but he didn't move his eyes from the window. Jeff frowned. Christian was so beautiful and fragile, kinda like one of those porcelain dolls that his momma used to have. But Christian had been shattered and broken. Life wasn't fair. God wasn't fair. "Christian, it's time to go to your room," Jeff whispered, hiding his face as he felt tears forming in his eyes. "Just a few more minutes, Jeff. He's coming. I know it. He said he would never leave me," Christian said with a slight pout. Jeff fought back the tears. "You can watch from your room. It has a better view you know." Christian turned and smiled at him. "Thank you Jeff. It's just not like him not to call." Jeff nodded his head as he helped Christian to his room. It was always the same. The same conversation. Every day. Christian still believed that his lover would come for him. As Jeff stood beside of Christian in his room, he glanced up the sky. "Why?" He whispered silently, questioning God. "How could you do this to him? How could you just abandon him?" ************************************* Jeff stayed with Christian for as long as he could. He knew he would get in trouble with his supervisor if he stayed any longer, Regal was such an ass. As he left, he pulled up the recliner to the window. "Here Christian, you can sit and wait on him," Jeff suggested. As always Christian sat down as he continued to watch for his lover. Jeff kissed the top of Christian's head. "Good night," he whispered. He knew he would find him fast asleep in the chair in the morning. As Jeff shut and locked the door behind him, a beautiful angel appeared behind Christian. A heavenly glow surrounded him, his long blonde hair shimmered in the faint light. He was hurt by Jeff's words earlier. He was always with Christian. He had never let his side. "I'm here, Christian," the angel whispered softly in his ear. "You're never alone." Christian shivered as he looked around, but saw nothing. He turned and continued to stare outside. Jericho watched as his earth angel waited for a lover who could never come back. Unable to resist, knowing he wasn't suppose to unless absolutely necessary, Jericho appeared so that Christian could see him. Christian caught a glimpse of someone behind him. "Jeff?" He whispered as he turned. Christian gasped as he looked at the man that stood before him. "Don't be afraid little one. I am an angel sent by God," Jericho whispered. "It's time to let him go, Christian. It's time to heal." "NO!" Christian screamed. "He promised he'd never leave me." "Some promises never should be made," Jericho whispered calmly. "NO! He's coming back! I know it!" Christian yelled as he turned to look out the window once more. "No. He can't." "WHY NOT? You're here!" Christian snapped angrily. "Adam is in the Kingdom of God, but he is not allowed to return." "Liar!" Christian screamed. "Leave me alone!" "I can't. I'm always with you Christian. I always have been," Jericho whispered as his hand gently touched Christian's shoulder. Christian jumped as he suddenly found himself back in his home. He was staring out the bay window like he had that dreadful night. The phone rang and Christian jumped as he stared at it. "Answer it Christian," Jericho whispered. Christian looked at him as tears streamed down his face. "No," he gasped, shaking his head. Not wanting to accept the reality. "You must," Jericho urged. With a trembling hand, Christian picked the phone up and listened to the voice that had haunted his sleep each night. Christian dropped the phone. "Adam's dead," Christian whimpered, unable to catch his breath. Jericho nodded as he pulled Christian to him, comforting him. "Let him go, little one." ************************************** Jeff was surprised to find Christian sitting on the bed when he walked in. Something was wrong, Christian never left the window. "Christian?" Jeff asked concerned. "Are you alright?" "Adam's dead." Jeff gasped. "Yes, he is. What happened last night?" Jeff asked confused at Christian's sudden change. Christian started to say that an angel told him, but Jericho was shaking his head. He was right. They would probably medicate him some more. "I just realized it." Jeff sighed as he told Christian he would go get the doctor. Maybe there was hope for Christian after all. ************************************ Christian sighed as he walked into his home. He had done a good job convincing the doctors that he was okay. The only person he would miss at that place was Jeff. He had never met a kinder person. Christian looked around. Everything was as he remembered it. Lita and Trish, his next door neighbors had taken care of it until he could come home. He ran his fingers over the wood carving on the grandfather's clock. Everything reminded him of Adam. "Christian," Jericho said appearing behind him. Christian jumped. "I wish you wouldn't do that!" He snapped. "Sorry," Jericho said blushing. "Why am I the only one who can see you? Are you real?" Christian asked bitterly. Jericho smiled. "I'm your guardian angel, Christian. Only you can see me." "Can I exchange you?" "What?" Jericho asked in disbelief. "I want Adam to be my angel," Christian whispered. Jericho frowned and shook his head. "Impossible." "Leave me alone!" Christian growled as he stormed into the master bedroom heading straight toward the medicine cabinet, pulling out all of the pill bottles he could find and lining them up. Grabbing the glass that Lita or Trish had forgotten and filled it with water. "Christian! You can't!" Jericho gasped. "I'll be with Adam!" Christian screamed. "No, you won't. Suicide will only separate you from him." Christian dropped the glass of water he had in his hand, the sound of glass shattering echoed in the bathroom. "It's not fair!" Christian screamed as his small fists beat against Jericho's chest. "I hate you! I hate GOD!" "No, Christian," Jericho whispered allowing Christian to hit him. Christian stormed into the bedroom stopping as he saw the bed. Memories of their lovemaking, their lengthy conversations on any and everything, the way Adam smiled as he held him, his scent, his touch. Christian fell to his knees as he was overwhelmed by all the emotions assaulting him. His undying love for Adam. His anger at God, Adam, and that damn drunk driver. His need to be with Adam, to love and be loved. Christian cried until he could cry no more, finally letting sleep claim him as he laid down on the floor, a feeling of hopelessness was all that he felt now. Jericho gently lifted him and placed him on the bed, guarding him, vowing to help him find happiness once more. ************************************* Far above in the heavens, in a realm of unimaginable beauty, Adam cried. Everyone tried to comfort him, but his soul refused to forget Christian. He'd broken a promise to his earth angel and no amount of words of wisdom from the elders could take away his pain. No matter how hard the arch angels tried, Adam would not forget. The longer they kept them separated, the stronger their love became. As Adam cried, a soft rain started to fall from the heavens and God sighed. Adam's love for Christian rivaled his own love for all his children on earth. Love that strong could never be broken. ************************************ As Jericho watched the sun approach, for the first time in centuries he felt the warmth of tears as they streamed down his face. He could feel it. Christian was dying. He was dying of a broken heart. He had lost all will to live and welcomed death. Jericho jumped as he heard a soft voice whisper. "Jericho, come home. You have done all you can do. I have decided to grant Christian and Adam's wish. They will be united." Jericho smiled as he looked down at the young man curled in a fetal position on the bed and kissed the top of his head. A faint smile appeared on Christian's face. "I see him Jericho. He's coming," Christian whispered as he took one last breath before moving no more. ************************************** Christian ran to Adam, wrapping his arms around him so tightly, squeezing him, never wanting to let him go. "I thought I had lost you forever," Christian whispered. "I promised you didn't I?" Adam said flashing his beautiful smile as he took Christian's hand and led him to the bright light. "Together forever," Adam whispered as they disappeared into the light. ********************************* Spend all your time waiting for that second chance for a break that would make it okay there's always one reason to feel not good enough and it's hard at the end of the day I need some distraction oh beautiful release memory seeps from my veins let me be empty and weightless and maybe I'll find some peace tonight In the arms of an angel fly away from here from this dark and cold room and the endlessness that you fear you are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie you're in the arms of an angel may you find some comfort there so tired of the straight line and everywhere you turn there's vultures and thieves at your back and the storm keeps on twisting you keep on building the lie that you make up for all that you lack it don't make no difference escaping one last time it's easier to believe in this sweet madness oh this glorious sadness that brings me to my knees In the arms of an angel fly away from here from this dark cold room and the endlessness that you fear you are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie you're in the arms of the angel may you find some comfort here.......... ~The End~ |
