Part of the great plain of north and west Europe, it has maximum dimensions of 190 by 160 miles (360 by 257 km) and is low and flat except in Lunburg in the SE. About half the country's area is below sea level; making the famous Dutch dikes a requisite to the use of much land. |

L'Arc-de-Triomphe de l'�toile, PARIS, FRANCE - It commemorates the victories of Napoleon I. Construction was begun in 1806 by J.F. Chalgrin from his own designs and was carried on after his death by L. Goust, J.N. Huyot, and G.A. Blouet successively, who brought the arch to completion in 1836. It is 164 ft (50m) high, 148 ft (45m) wide, and 72 ft (22m) deep, with colossal symbolic groups flanking the arch.

Tour Eiffel, PARIS, FRANCE - The Eiffel Tower was built for the Exposition of 1889 by Alexandre Eiffel. It is 984-ft (300m) high and consists of an iron framework supported on four masonry piers, from which rise four columns uniting to form one shaft. |
