ISLA DE COZUMEL, MEXICO - It's the largest island to the Republic of Mxico.  Cozumel lies about 14 km off the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.  It is 53 km long (34 miles) and 14 km wide (8 miles).  The limestone surface is pitted with caves and holes  (cenotes).  The island was originally named by the Maya:  Ah-Cuzamil-Peten/Place of the swallows.   It has been inhabited by the Maya since at least 300 A.D.   Spaniards came... By 1600, the island was completely abandoned.  Pirates took advantage of the calm deep waters to rest between their raids and used Cozumel as a base of operation (Henry Morgan & Jean lafitte).   In 1927, the first airplane touched down on island soil.  In it was the great aviator Charles Lindberg, fresh from his New York-Paris run.

COBA, an important archaeological site.  It's  located about 44  km West of Tulum, between five natural lakes.  We walked some distances to visit a part of the park, and the earth roads are completely surrounded by vegetation or jungle.   Discovered in 1891 by archaeologist Teobert Maler after hearing rumors of a fabled lost city, Coba was not excavated until 1973 when the Mexican government started financing the project.  Excavation is still under way (42 square mile site is unexcavated.  Miles of Sacbes/roads run through the  jungle linking Coba with other important Mayan cities and Ceremonial Center.  Coba is known to have at least 50 of theses Sacbes. Coba boasts the second tallest pyramid of the Mayan world:  42 meters hight with 120 steps, Nohoch Mul, is worth the climb.  Though sometimes windy at the top, the view is spectacular.  We did it!
