It's A Crime, The Way Some People Treat Their Dogs!

Dogfighting is a Felony!
Even Spectators may be Arrested, Fined and/or Jailed.

Many Americans admire and cherish dogs, as loyal, trusting and loving members of their own families. Some people, however, routinely abuse "man's best friend" for the illegal and barbaric purpose of dogfighting.

Sadly, in Louisiana, dogfighting activities are not uncommon. The fights may even take place out in the open, in tough, inner-city neighborhoods. Sometimes, the events are conducted in secret, along the outskirts of small rural towns. For the tormented dogs, however, the outcome is always the same. To satisfy the greed and bloodlust of their owners and other spectators at these events, the unfortunate animals are forced to endure excruciating pain and suffering, in bloody fights to the death.

Not only are these animals savagely wounded and/or killed during fights, they are almost always abused outside of the ring. The animals are subjected to cruel training practices, designed to make them vicious, and they are often deprived of the most basic necessities, like adequate food, water, shelter and vet care.

Help Us Put Dogfighters Behind Bars!
If you see a dogfight in progress, call your local police department immediately! Also contact your local humane society, animal control agency, and/or LISA at (504) 366-8972, if you are aware of dogfighting activities or other incidents of animal abuse.

Is there a Dogfighter in Your Neighborhood?

If you answer "yes" to one or more of these questions, contact LISA to report the possibility of illegal dogfighting.

  • At the home of the individual in question, are large numbers of dogs, particularly pit bulls, being housed outside, in generally substandard living conditions? Are heavy chains being used to restrain the animals?
  • Have groups of men been regularly seen congregating with pit bulls, at the residence in question?
  • Do any of the dogs observed at the residence have their ears cut off? (This cruel procedure is sometimes done to prevent other dogs from grabbing onto an animal's ears during a fight.) Do any of the animals seen at the residence appear scarred or injured in any way?
  • Have you witnessed the use of any brutal "training" methods, to make dogs more aggressive, stronger or vicious? Are treadmills used, to give the animals a workout?
  • Do different animals seem to come and go from the residence, only to subsequently disappear from the location completely?
  • Is the individual in question generally violent or aggressive? Has he been in trouble with the law? (Dogfighting activities are often linked to illegal drug activities and/or weapons violations.)

IN ADDITION TO CHARGES OF DOGFIGHTING, IF AN OFFENDER IS CONVICTED OF AGGRAVATED CRUELTY - THE MALICIOUS KILLING, MAIMING, MUTILATING OR TORTURING OF AN ANIMAL - HE COULD RECEIVE A SENTENCE OF UP TO TEN YEARS IN PRISON AND/OR $25,000 IN FINES!
