| The grammar that I hear people using here sometimes just makes me want to scream! What is even more annoying is the certainty that I also was speaking that way before going to Macedonia and getting schooled by foreigners on ENGLISH grammar and sentence construction. OK, lets be serious I am not exactly scholarly. And now that I have returned to the States I say things out loud and then think, is that a word? Or, what does that mean? Or I reword a sentence to avoid a particularly confusing grammaticala sentence where Im not sure if the grammar is proper or if a word is being used in the right waywell, I just did it again. Am I forgetting English!? Argh! But, one thing that has really been bugging the hell out of me is peoples use of well, I dont even know what its called, but heres an example. Theres a lot of reasons. Theres so many people there. What is this!?! You would write this, youd write There are a lot of reasons, not a conjunction for There IS a lot of reasons. It is just a careless, sloppy way of speakingand I know that I used to do it too because it seems as though most people do. Most of the time when I point it out to people they seem kind of surprised and chagrined. Do you use theres with a plural noun!? If you dostop!!! And then listen to all the obviously intelligent, educated, and articulate people who dont realize how silly it sounds. |
