Artist Profile: D.H. Lawrence
D.H. Lawrence was born in 1885 in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire England. Although Lawrences mother had a little more learning than her husband and was a housewife, she encouraged her children to pursue an education so they could move up socially. Lawrences father was a miner who drank heavily and had little formal education.

Lawrence attended Nottingham high school and Nottingham University. He worked as a clerk and a teacher  prior to becoming a full-time writer.

The themes in
Lawrences work stem from his middle-class upbringing, his relationship with his family, and the political events in Europe. Lawrence developed a close and what some might consider an "unhealthy relationship" with his mother. This became most evident during his relationships with other women.

Lawrence traveled extensively in Italy, Australia, Mexico, and France due to the events of World War I and his tuberculosis. While in France with his wife Frida, Lawrence died of tuberculosis (March 2, 1930).
