Innana is the Goddess of fertility, love, war and the divine personification of the planet Venus. She arouses amourous desire in all creatures. As a lunar Goddess, she breathes life into us as the moon waxes and withdraws as the moon wanes. Innana is the law-giver and also a war Goddess known for her courage. She is often represented standing on a chariot drawn by seven lions, with a bow in her hands and the eight-pointed star is her symbol.
To the ancient Sumerians, Innana held the title "Queen of Heaven". She was a triple Goddess ruling aspects of the Heavens (the sky, stars, moon, & climate); the Earth (fertility & fecundity of the land, plants, animals & people); and the Underworld (death & rebirth). Innana traversed the Underworld, then returned to life. Within Sumerian culture, her death mirrored the death of crops, people, and animals in daily life. Her rebirth symbolized their seasonal or cyclical regeneration. |
