Evaluate a catalogue

 

Describe the organization

  1. What type is it: library, company, archives, etc.
  2. What type of catalogue is it? (print, online, microform, etc.)
  3. What company produced the software for the system?
  4. Who are the users of the system?

 

Describe the collection

  1. What types of materials are included?
  2.  What classification scheme is being used?

 

Describe the catalogue or database

  1. Where can you find it (URL, postal address, etc.)
  2. Who has access to it and are there different levels of access

 

Discuss how the catalogue meets the following bibliographic objectives:

  1. Finding – Enables a person to find an entity of which either the author, title, or subject is known
  2. Collocating – Shows what the information organization has by a given author, subject, or kind of entity
  3. Choice – Assists in the choice of an entity as to its edition or its character
  4. Navigation – Provides guidance on the use of the system

 

 

Develop and present a one-page evaluation tool that you will use to evaluate the catalogue or database of your choice using the above criteria.

 

Include at least a one-page narrative summary of your overall assessment of the catalogue.
