These walls are what remain of the village of Tyuonyi. The circular building (the remains seen here) was at least two stories high, contained about four hundred rooms and housed about one hundred people.
First floor rooms had no doors. To enter the building you had to climb a ladder to the roof and enter your rooms through a hatch-like door.
Most daily activities of the community took place in the central plaza -- the area enclosed by the building above. Women fired pottery and ground corn. Men made bows and arrows and stone tools. Children herded turkeys and played games. |
