Puerto Rico is Fun
CRUISE SHIP DAYS
It was 1992 and I was fresh out of college with my Associate's Degree in Travel & Tourism.  At that time tourism jobs were far & few between because of the Persian Gulf War.  I had been on interviews, sent out tons of resumes and had no luck.  So, I landed a job at a local women's health club doing their accounting.  Well, that only lasted 3 days.......Premier Cruise Lines was interested in hiring me on as a Youth Counselor!  Within a weeks time I had to quit my job, pack, say goodbye to friends & family, acquire an airline ticket and be set to take on the job that would change my life forever!  I was very excited, but also very scared.  I was 20 years old, never lived away from home, (let alone on a cruise ship) and was going miles away where I knew no one!

I originally came up with the idea of working onboard a cruise ship after speaking with my college professor.  For our Spring Break in 1991, our travel club had taken a 4-day cruise to Key West, Playa Del Carmen & Cozumel, Mexico.   It was my first cruise and I loved it !   However, I do get sea-sick.  It's usually just the first night and then I'm okay....just until I acquire my sea legs.  After that experience I wondered if I could handle working onboard.  I read a book called "How To Get A Job With A Cruise Line" by Mary Fallon-Miller. My professor told me to apply to all the cruise lines that offer the onboard children's programs since I had a lot of experience with children (i.e. babysitting, high school daycare course etc.) I also had a fellow classmate take black & white photos of me to send along with my resumes (a tip from the book).  That is what I did and I couldn't believe it when I got the call!
