Langdon hooks the reader with the initial scene at an auction house where Lady Davenport acquires the beautiful woman on the block. Lady Davenport, a rich, brilliant mistress, has just as much time as money to play with her latest acquisition. | |||||||||||||||||
| Langdon strategically tones the book with Lady Davenport's inner conflict of concealing her desire for intimacy with her new toy, signifying the immense pain that she suffered at the loss of a previous slave. While Lady Davenport is rich, spoiled she is not. After paying $100,000 for Amber, Lady Davenport had her once then explained that she would not keep a slave against her will and gave Amber the option to leave. At each juncture where their relationship becomes more emotionally intimate, Lady Davenport kept giving her slave the option to leave or refuse her. Never does the reader sense that Amber is indentured or indebted to her Mistress, but that Amber's only concern is her Mistress' pleasure and that she be available to her always. | |||||||||||||||||
| The beautiful creature, Amber, is a well-trained slave who can detach from pain and remain perfectly still throughout a paddling or whipping. In some respects she seems too good to be true, or is it that Amber will become the new fictitious role model for submissives like O once was? Of her vibrant and well-developed characters, Langdon only gives us a taste of Dimitri, Natasha and Lady Meredith Carrington, and how they are interwoven into the life of the intricate Lady Davenport.
