Ongoing Writing Elements: parts of speech, sentence parts for simple and compound sentences, developing organization, showing vs. telling, writing process and revision strategies, as well as other topics. These elements are taught through various mini lessons throughout the year in a writing workshop model.Additional individualized writing instruction will be given through conferencing and small group instruction as needed.
Ongoing Reading Elements: We will focus primarily on fiction and students will gain knowledge in understanding and recognizing the elements of fiction. Along with items read by the entire class, we with emphasize individual reading and students will be expected to read books of their choice at home and in class regularly. We will use various before, during and after reading strategies to encourage comprehension.
Functional Skills: Students will be instructed in many study strategies and group skills. They will be expected to take risks and stretch themselves both academically and interpersonally. Students will take personal responsibility for their growth and are encouraged to create assignments which meet the requirements but better suit their individual stengths or preferences.
Other items sprinkled throughout the course: presentations, portoflio creation, creative writing, allusion, memory strategies, poetry, group activities including communication skills, writing mechanics including spelling and punctuation, vocabulary development, figurative language, dialogue development, etc. (You can bet that if it has anything to do with fiction we are going to be doing it in this class!)
