John and Elizabeth came to London Mr. Becher called and paid us a long visit. We asked him if he knew where J. A. McDonald was. He said at Quebec and asked what we wanted of him. John said he wanted to get Edward appointed his deputy in the Surrogate Court and the issuing of Licences transferred to George if possible for a year or two Becher immediately offered to write to Mr. McDonald on the subject and sat down at once and did write the offer was made with great apparent kindness and earnestness and it was difficult to refuse his letter but George was annoyed and said that he would have nothing to do with it. I do not know whether John will send the letter.
