'Child, I speak to you
not with my voice, but with my heart.'
Location: Singapore Zoological Gardens, Singapore
It had been many years since I last visited the zoo as a student. With
the coming of photography as a hobby, I felt the urge to visit it
again. It would allow me to photograph some of my favorite subjects.
In this instance I happened to be in the right place at the right time.
I observed a young zebra resting on the ground, and when an adult
walked over to it, I was almost guaranteed to see some form of
interaction between the two animals. As the adult lowered its head, the
lines and curves became more obvious and I fired the shutter.
This is one of my earliest images and is still one of my favorites.
However I made a blunder by focusing on the nose of the little zebra
instead of its eye. When photographing subjects such as these, the
eye(s) is the thing that first attracts a viewer's attention, so do
remember to get them in focus.
I only wish to have chanced upon such a tender moment after getting my
technique right. But that only comes with practice. Everything else is
a learning experience.
