One night, we had the perfect storm. Blinding flashes of lightning
darted across the sky, and the rolling rumbles of thunder was
absolutely disturbing. The sky seemed to tear apart and torrents of
water rained down. I had difficulty getting back to sleep that night.
The next day the weather had turned around completely. The sun was out
and water droplets sparkled like jewels on every leaf. Then I spotted a
tiny grub hanging by a thread from a branch. It was swaying
precariously in the wind and I admired its courage and technique.
In order to achieve this extreme closeup, a jeweler's loupe was held in
front of my lens with some Bluetack. This brought the minimum focusing
distance down to just 3cm or so. In the process, depth of field became
paper thin, throwing the entire background out of focus, blurring it
into a smooth green canvas...it was the perfect backdrop for the
patterned grub.
