Some years ago, before Singapore's National Day in 2005, a National Dog
Walk was held at a park near East Coast Beach. Hundreds of people and
their dogs came together to make this event a huge success. The short
walk culminated with the cutting of a cake, a piece of which was given
every dog. With so many potential subjects, making pictures was easy.
I stood near the bottom of a slope with my telephoto lens aimed
upwards, and photographed the dogs as they moved nearer. In retrospect
the lower viewpoint also allowed me to photograph at the dogs' eye
level, making for a more intimate portrait. I used a large aperture to
keep the shutter speed up, enabling me to freeze action without using a
flash. The great side effect of this was a shallow depth of field that
turned the background highlights into attractive glowing discs.
