Backyard View

Canon EOS 1D + Canon 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II
1/60s, f/8, ISO 200

Location: Wanaka, New Zealand

It was a shame that we only had one night's stay at a motel at Wanaka, because in addition to great lodging, reasonable pricing and a real fireplace, it also had a tremendous backyard view. From here it was possible to see the snow-capped mountains on the left and a smidge of Lake Wanaka on the right. The benches created foreground interest while the sky itself was filled with different kinds of clouds.

In such a situation, the use of a circular polarizer and a neutral density graduate was called for. Together they have allowed me to obtain great exposure in the foreground while keeping the sky from getting overexposed, the color of the sky and grass are more saturated, and the clouds in the sky are more defined.

But one of the things I couldn't capture was the crispness of the cool alpine breeze.
